TheIrrigatia Solar Automatic Irrigation Kit requires no mains water supply or electricity and it won't waste your valuable water butt-collected and stored water by irrigating garden plants when the weather is cloudy or overcast; instead, this ingenious solar powered pump system will automatically spring into life when the sun beats down and your plants need moisture the most. They are easy to install and set up, and once in, they will water automatically with minimal supervision – ideal for small to medium gardens or allotments – and can be used for pots, raised beds, hanging baskets, vegetables and greenhouses.

The new water level sensor is placed in the water barrel and will detect when the water is running out and emits an audible warning during daylight hours. The water level sensor comes with a 5m cable - if the controller is positioned further away the water level sensor can be disabled. We call them ‘Irrigation Units’, or ‘IU’ for short.

The printed circuit board (PCB) in my controller was bad. The company promptly sent me a new PCB and instructions for replacing the bad one. The engine room of the system is the pump unit which is simply mounted above a water butt (you'll need to supply your own water butt!) and pumps water every three hours - the quantity delivered depends on the sunshine hours and the chosen setting. Unlike conventional timer systems, by watering little and often, the soil stays moist and water does not run off, saving you water. A 200 litre water barrel typically lasts 1 week to 10 days.Waterwand should not be positioned more than 20m from water butt and no more than 2m higher than the water butt. It detects changes in the weather and conditions and adjusts the length of time it waters during the 3-hour watering cycle accordingly. Up to 1 metre of seep hose can be pushed onto the drippers supplied with the main unit. A stopper should be put in the other end and stakes can be used to hold it in position. This arrangement can be used to spread water over a larger area than the dripper alone and is useful for large pots/baskets, germinating short rows of seedlings, burying with the roots of valuable plants to aid establishment. Drippers can be at different heights, but the individual lengths of seep hose must be kept level. Occasionally there are delays. I’ve tried attaching drip to a rain barrel before, and the problem is that barrels don’t have pressure like a faucet. That’s especially true if you have to send water uphill or into containers.
