About this deal

Kathryn has already tried a form of this. But she used charcoal rather than graphite, and that will produce a messier line. No, you cannot print onto graphite paper. Graphite paper is not designed to be fed through a printer. Is graphite paper the same as transfer paper?

Make sure the graphite is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the paper. Otherwise, you may end up with an uneven or patchy transfer. For more experienced artists, graphite paper can be used for transferring the image they want to draw onto their drawing paper. What is the best method of transferring drawings to drawing paper? That’s what Kathryn wants to know. Here’s her question. Whether you begin with my favorite methods or explore on your own, deciding on the best method of transferring drawings is really a personal choice. So I’m going to talk about the three transfer methods that work best for me. My Best Methods of Transferring Drawings Light Box Those methods may or may not work for you. If they don’t, there are other ways to transfer drawings, such as projectors and copying gadgets. You can also try freehanding your image onto the canvas. This method takes more time and patience, but it’s doable! How do you transfer a picture from paper to canvas? Wax paper: This is the most straightforward and most inexpensive type of transfer paper. However, it’s also the least effective. The wax can prevent the ink from bonding properly with the surface, resulting in a fuzzy or smeared image. There are a few different ways to transfer a picture from paper to canvas. You can use the graphite transfer method, or you can trace your image onto the canvas using a lightbox.

If you use Saral, I recommend Saral Graphite Transfer Paper over the other types. It behaves the most like regular graphite. My Preferred Transfer Paper for Detailed Drawing Graphite transfer paper can be a useful tool for artists of all levels. It allows you to easily move your drawings from paper to canvas or other surfaces, and the results can be very impressive.Get a paper photocopy or inkjet print of your reference photo. Make sure that the image is printed at exactly the same size that you want to paint it. If you’re interested in trying out this technique, we recommend giving it a try. You may be surprised at how easy it is to use and how great the finished product looks.

But most line drawings transferred with graphite are easily cleaned up after you transfer the line drawing.

Sharing is Caring

If the graphite is too dark upon your canvas or paper, simply use a kneaded rubber or other eraser to blot out the excess graphite. Really, all you need is a hint of a line to remind you what goes where. Dark lines aren't necessary! To get lighter transfer lines, use a harder pencil to make the transfer paper—2B or HB for example. 2B pencils are a little bit harder the 4B or 6B, so they leave fewer smudges and are easier to erase. I don’t remember that Saral was particularly easy to erase or particularly difficult to erase. I recall no smudging or other problems, either. Overall, it’s a good product and easy to use. Don’t get me wrong, I am a firm believer in learning to draw. Drawing is all about seeing accurately and if you can’t “see” you can’t paint well. But if we all had to wait to learn to draw well before we got in to the fun of painting, we might never start. It can help to draw double lines from the photocopy onto the paper in a couple of spots to hep you re-position if necessary. Marking the corners before you start can also help.)
