About this deal

Like any other brand of boiler, your Potterton boiler may develop a fault and stop working at some point or another. The majority of boiler problems occur when you need your boiler most and usually when you start using your heating again during the winter. While some Potterton boiler problems are safe and simple to fix yourself (such as re-pressuring your boiler), many issues can only be rectified by a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. We’ve written a guide that looks at some of the most Common Potterton Boiler Problems and Repairs, as well as the steps you need to take when faced with each boiler issue. Potterton Boiler Fault Codes As with most modern boilers, the environment the PCB works in (i.e. inside a central heating boiler) is quite hostile for modern electronics due to the constant heating and cooling of the board, as the boiler is turned on for periods, then left off and cold for periods, and functional failures result. The Potterton Suprima HE is a new(ish) and completely different design of boiler despite bearing the old Suprima name. About the only thing it has in common with the previous Suprima boilers is the compact cast iron heat exchanger. Everything else inside is different. Not very successful in terms of sales for Potterton and I think it is now discontinued. I’ve only ever been called out to fix a few of them so I don’t have much depth of experience but here are the faults I’ve seen and/or know about:

The thermistor is a semiconductor device that senses the temperature of the flow pipe from the heat exchanger so the control board can turn the gas flames on and off to maintain a broadly steady flow temperature. The resistance of the thermistor rises and falls with temperature and the control board reads this resistance and uses the information to work out when to turn the gas flames on and off. Its quite common for the thermistor to stop changing resistance linearly which confuses the control board, leading the the gas flames turning OFF at too low a temperature. The boiler still lights and runs briefly but turns OFF at too low a temperature. Quite perplexing to the user! Fuel efficiency is quoted on the SEDBUK database as between 76.6% and 78.7% depending on the exact model you have, so pretty good for a non-condensing boiler. The printed circuit board (PCB) gets this signal from an air pressure switch, which measures internal air pressure to determine if the fan is working. If the problem is being caused by a more serious issue with an internal component in the boiler such as the heat exchanger, you will need to get an engineer to take a look and suggest the best course of action # 2 – Boiler Switches Off Before Radiators Are Up To Temperature As the cost of a new Potterton boiler only makes up around 40-50% of the overall installation cost, it makes sense to spend a little extra to get a boiler with a long warranty — 5 year at least. And if there’s ever an option to extend the boiler’s warranty, that’s something you should investigate. If it is a minor issue, such as the wiring, the fix should be relatively simple and affordable. If there is a problem with a major component such as the PCB, this is an altogether bigger and more expensive. Other problems which can be mis-diagnosed as control board fault are air pressure switch failure, gas valve failure, pump failure and the boiler genuinely overheating. These are unusual though. The most common non-control board failure is the flue fan. Again easily replaced.

It’s a great choice, particularly in a new build property as the installation is a bit easier and it utilises less space.

What Causes a Boiler Not to Provide Hot Water? When a boiler ignites, it will take a while for the return pipe to heat up. Hot water comes out of the flow (so this pipe warms up within minutes). With power outputs being similar, the main thing to focus on is the warranty period that protects the boiler . The warranty on the Titanium 24kW Combi is 7 years, whilst the Worcester Bosch 25i offers up to 10 years. We’d always go for a longer warranty, and you’ll see here the prices for the Worcester with a 10-year warranty are similar to Potterton’s.

An engineer will need to look at all of the possible causes of this problem to ascertain which issue your Potterton boiler has. The fan is a crucial component in any boiler as it helps to remove the harmful gases your boiler creates from your boiler. When you switch on your Potterton boiler, you might well notice a small whirring sound as it fires up.This isn’t the only problem that can cause your Potterton boiler to provide no hot water. So, it’s worth getting a qualified local Gas Safe boiler engineer in to help. Potterton is known as a reliable and reasonably priced boiler manufacturer, so if you have your heart set on a system boiler, then this could be the right choice for you. Don’t forget installation costs though! When you turn on your boiler, you’ll notice a small whirring noise that goes on for 2-5 seconds before the boiler fires up.

Potterton offers a wide range of optional boiler controls, such as mechanical timers, programmable wireless sensors and innovative energy-saving controls to suit your specific needs. These controls are designed to give you better control of your heating and hot water system and to help make your boiler more energy-efficient and cost-effective. As we know how difficult it can be to choose the right boiler controls for you and your home, we’ve created a guide that covers the different types of Potterton Boiler Controls available. Our helpful guide also explains how each control works, the advantages they offer and which Potterton boilers they are compatible with. Potterton Gas Boilers Range

Combi, System, or Heat Only Boiler: Which Potterton Boiler Do You Need?

This is one of the most common Potterton boiler problems, but sadly, it plagues all boilers and hydronic heating systems out there. NTC thermistors are temperature sensors. If they are faulty, they’ll provide incorrect readings to the PCB. However, on occasion, it’s actually the PCB that’s at fault. Limescale
