About this deal

Gray was a British chef, who co-founded this West London restaurant with American-born chef Ruth Rogers, wife of the Italian-born British architect Richard Rogers, in 1987. We always thought it would be interesting to think about whether you could do a book for children, to teach kids,’ Ruthie (as she’s affectionately known) tells Tatler. When Vanity Fair ran its famous London Swings Again issue, the launch party was inevitably held at the restaurant. In those three years, he read a lot, and someone – my daughter-in-law, actually – sent us these books developed by a neurologist, an artist and a photographer in Holland for people with autism and dementia. The River Cafe Look Book’s opening pages reproduce delectable images of the featured dishes, alongside crisp, surprising, inspirational photography.

Think of cooking for beginners and it’s unlikely that a Michelin-starred, world-renowned restaurant springs to mind. Concentrating on authentic Italian flavours, Rogers and Gray created their Mediterranean utopia in an unloved corner of Hammersmith. After 35 years and a roster of cookbooks, there had been plans in the works for some time for the next River Cafe book to be aimed at a different kind of audience. Tobias greets her old boss in her new place at noon sharp with a mix of affection and a slight nervousness, the more so when Rogers, who is an avid hugger, but quite steely of eye, asks her what we should eat: “I’m told you do fabulous quiches? Rogers quickly scans the short, simple menu, a little homage to her own practice of shifting seasonality. This highly anticipated cookbook is more accessible than any other to have come from the kitchen of Ruth Rogers' legendary Michelin-star restaurant The River Cafe, set on the banks of the Thames in London. Among the evocative juxtapositions the group ultimately chose to include within the book’s 100 “Look” pages: brown lentils next to autumn leaves scattered across a pavement; a meringue that echoes the texture of a classical sculpture; and spaghetti alle vongole topped with chili next to wilted red tulips.
