Living Battery: It's eventually revealed that the temporal anomalies caused by the Breath of the Gods are due to a colony of trapped Hrud, a xenos race with an innate ability to manipulate time in a localized area around them, used to make the machine function, as Telok did not have a C'tan shard to power it normally and had to use the Hrud as a substitue due to their entropic abilities.

The conclusion was more on the fantastival side, compared to the cold logic of the ways of the Mechanicus. Telok defeated, Galatea's real treachery revealed. The ending is a nice reflection of how those involved began, with the only focus being a selfish ambition. In the end, each still facing a facet of their own problems. An almost tragic ending that further reveals itself on the last paragraphs. Interesting to see if this will have a continuation. Mecha-Mooks: The crystalith constructs are poor shots, slow to react, and not very durable. Individually they aren’t much of a threat, but they’re quite dangerous in large numbers.

Sealed Evil in a Can: The Tindalosi were robotic assassins that grew beyond their programming and began killing whoever they pleased. Their creators responded by trapping them aboard automated starships and launching them into deep space to be forgotten. Telok found one of these craft and enslaved the Tindalosi within. I found Galatea to be fascinating, until it's true nature is revealed and suddenly all the air is let out. Arm Cannon: Bracha was the space marine who lost his arm to an Ork servitor and he had it replaced with a bionic arm with a built-in plasma gun. Why can't this guy write a Mechanicus book that doesn't end with people having nonsense super powers? What the hell does "shooting bolts of pure data" or whatever even mean? In Mechanicum we establish that the Omnissiah is a load of hokum but now people are "Machine-Touched" and can dive into the Matrix? In the pretty goot second part to Priests of Mars, Graham McNeill shows again that it is possible to write Space Opera in the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40K.

The story, in my opinion is not worth 3 books to tell it. I feel rather cheated that after the first book (which was not clear to me it would be a trilogy) the second book marches on to a ponderous conclusion that's never reached.... A further issue that that many of the points brought up within the story are not resolved or directly discussed. While there are some very interesting revelations and character moments, all of which easily justify this book’s worth despite its flaws, too often they seem to only be set-up for later on. While certain elements like the mutiny are resolved to varying degrees of success and give the characters something to react to, others are just ignored. Combined with the revelations provided in the final few chapters, it’s obvious a great deal of this book is just set-up for Gods of Mars.Genius Loci: The Speranza has a machine spirit that dwarfs those of forge worlds in depth and complexity. Most of it is still dormant, however.
