This morning, at its annual conference in Seattle, the American Library Association gave out its prizes for children's and young adult literature. Its awards include the prestigious Caldecott and Newbery medals. NPR's Lynn Neary reports.

They read them over the course of a year, but only met face-to-face for the first time during the conference. Read the story and invite learners to record what they notice and what they wonder. They can use words or doodles to chart their thinking. Include the front endpapers in this exploration. Leadership is shared with students through a variety of leadership roles and student voice leads to innovations within the school. MARY FELLOWS: There are cutaways of the lighthouse so we can see the interior. There are these wonderful uses of swooping and swirling seagulls and crashing waves and Northern Lights. And it's a feast of color. The repetitive lines story was rather sad, and more than a bit gloomy at times, though it’s also sweet and has an ending that while not idyllic is pleasant and happy enough. Some might also love the story but this could have worked fine for me as a wordless or nearly wordless picture book. For young children I can see how the words might be lulling and entertaining.

This may be a class read aloud, shared reading, small group setting, or independent reading. This is a choice for individual educators depending on the needs of students. Multiple copies of the book are recommended because students will be referring to the text throughout all of the learning experiences. Since students will be exploring the book in detail, it is important to leave plenty of “thinking work” for students, so it is best to avoid too much scaffolding during this first introduction. This is a lovely book and can be enjoyed by independent readers, reading aloud for families, schools, libraries, etc. The school community is able to see leadership in the physical environment, hear leadership through a common language , and feel leadership through a culture of caring, relationships, and affirmation. FELLOWS: And over hours and hours and hours, we talk. But it also becomes a process of embracing new loves during the course of this discussion and, sometimes a little regretfully, letting go of old loves that we have.
