About this deal

Starting with safety, there are a few really good options out there. I should also mention that using a hatchet to split kindling can be dangerous but when done correctly, you greatly reduce the risk of harming yourself. I’ll explain more about that later. A. A basic cast iron model will last for years with very little attention. You can clean it with a stiff brush and warm soapy water and remove stubborn deposits with mineral spirits. An occasional wipe with a light oil will help prevent rust, and if you like the decorative appearance, you might want to give it a coat of paint every couple of years.

As a general rule, gas log splitters are far more powerful than their electric counterparts. You’ll find gas log splitters with well over 30 tons of driving force, but 25 tons is about average. That’s enough to split logs up to around 24 inches in diameter. Well, more so than trying to split the log in one fell swoop. Swinging both the axe and the wood together greatly reduces the chance of hurting yourself because you no longer have to hold the log with your other hand. That’s great but there is an even better approach; a method to remove the chance of a glancing blow to your fingers.Holes: For added stability in use, it’s nice if the base has pre-drilled holes to allow the kindling splitter to be bolted down. Simply take a piece of firewood and place it on the bottom notch. Next, take the handle and firmly push it down until the wood begins to split. Once the handle is pushed down as far as it can go, lift the handle up and move the firewood to a higher notch. Continue this process until the wood splits into a nice piece of kindling. Eighteen-inch seasoned logs need at least 20 tons of driving force, while a green 18-inch log can require as much as 30 tons of force.

Even though most log splitters are designed to take the work out of splitting large logs, there is something unique about completing the task by hand. Sometimes, you may not even have the luxury of hauling a gas or electric splitter with you. A pole splitter is a bit like an axe-head fixed on a vertical pole. It takes a couple of minutes to set up, but once fixed, you simply slide the blade up and down the pole. It offers more accuracy for the inexperienced woodcutter, but sometimes you still have to put your hand in the path of the blade. There are several different components, which some people find overly complicated. This easy-to-operate log splitter might not be the biggest, but it’s no slouch in the field, either. Its 15-amp motor provides over 13,000 pounds of pressure to split logs up to 10 inches in diameter and 20.5 inches in length; the side-support wings hold your log firmly in place, so no sliding while you cut. And the 5.5-inch wheels make it easy to transport the log splitter right where you want it. The sharpness of the blade: For the blade to work effectively, it must be of the correct sharpness. This will ensure that your work goes on efficiently and no inconveniences caused by it being blunt.

Key considerations

Gas and electric log splitters are measured in terms of driving force, which is the maximum amount of force the wedge can exert against the log. Naturally, the higher the tons of driving force, the stronger the tool, and the larger the logs you can split. As a general rule, gas log splitters can have much higher driving force than electric models, but the main consideration is the typical size of logs you’ll be splitting. For many people, a low to medium driving force will be sufficient.
