About this deal

The Storrow Drive Connector, a companion bridge to the Zakim, began carrying traffic from I-93 to Storrow Drive in 1999. The project had been under consideration for years, but was opposed by the wealthy residents of the Beacon Hill neighborhood. However, it finally was accepted because it would funnel traffic bound for Storrow Drive and downtown Boston away from the mainline roadway. [31] The Connector ultimately used a pair of ramps that had been constructed for Interstate 695, enabling the mainline I-93 to carry more traffic that would have used I-695 under the original Master Plan.

When selecting a used excavator, size is a crucial factor. The market is divided into small, mid-range, and large machines. The workload should determine the size required, with heavier duties requiring a larger machine. However, smaller excavators are ideal for tasks like drainage channel digging and landscaping, and they can access tight spaces that larger machines can’t. Given the scope and complexity of the Big Dig, experts have concluded that the project would have been simply unmanageable without partnering. Though the benefits of partnering on the Big Dig have not been quantified, there is sufficient data to support the conclusion that partnering contributed significantly to the reduction of claims and the avoidance of expensive and time-consuming litigation. The city sued to revoke the project's environmental certificate and forced the project planners to redesign the river crossing again. [30] Leonard P. Zakim Bridge McNichol, Dan (2002). The Big Dig. Planning began in 1982 with the works projected to be completed in the mid-to-late-1990s. The project overran and was plagued with issues including the death of a motorist. All of this eventually resulted in the budget ballooning and it finally being finished in 2007. COSS: So that's really where the story of the Big Dig begins, with this kind of moonshot, visionary idea to fix a terrible highway. Federal Highway Administration; Massachusetts Department of Public Works (August 1985). Third harbor tunnel, interstate 90/central artery, interstate 93: full environmental impact statement and final section 4(f) evaluation. The concept of “partnering” was first used by DuPont Engineering on a large-scale construction project in the mid-1980s, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was the first public agency to use partnering in its construction projects. Partnering is now widely used by numerous government and construction entities around the world. It involves an agreement to share project risks and to establish and promote partnership relationships. Partnering is a team problem-solving approach intended to eliminate the adversarial-relationship problems between owner and contractor by focusing on mutual interests with the help of a neutral facilitator. On the Big Dig, partnerships were used to improve schedule adherence, quality, safety, and project performance, as well as to reduce costs, claims, disputes, and litigation.

( November 2019) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) As part of the project, an elaborate Operations Control Center (OCC) control room was constructed in South Boston. Staffed on a " 24/7/365" basis, this center monitors and reports on traffic congestion, and responds to emergencies. Continuous video surveillance is provided by hundreds of cameras, and thousands of sensors monitor traffic speed and density, air quality, water levels, temperatures, equipment status, and other conditions inside the tunnel. The OCC can activate emergency ventilation fans, change electronic display signs, and dispatch service crews when necessary. [52] [53] [54] Problems [ edit ] Other challenges included existing subway tunnels crossing the path of the underground highway. To build slurry walls past these tunnels, it was necessary to dig beneath the tunnels and to build an underground concrete bridge to support the tunnels' weight, without interrupting rail service.
