About this deal

TheKinsky: How was the idea of REALITY PROJECT born?
AlmaPhotos: The idea of the project came to counter this false ideal of beauty imposed on us by the media, where everyone has to be tall, thin, with perfect skin, sculpted abs, big breasts and so on …
With our work we want to show that true beauty can be found in every body, regardless of size and shape.

Lots of people said no,” she says. “It was pretty demotivating. I was putting up ads in the street, anywhere I could. And the fact that I’d started the project during Covid didn’t help.” TK: What are you trying to bring out of them in this project.
AP: We hope that the message “beauty in every body”would reach most of our audience.
There’s a deep photographic research behind Reality Project, which has been fundamental to continue to produce images and trying to maintain a high standard.
Everyone being photographed has their own story. And photographing is like interviewing them.
We become part of their lives for a couple of hours and they become part of ours.
Giving everything we can, on both sides.
All those who were in front of our camera have come out stronger, and for us this is very satisfying.

Ultimately, it was thanks to word-of-mouth that Odette’s project finally gathered steam. The initial shoots for the series that was to become ‘Belles Mômes’(Beautiful Girls ) took place in a studio where Odette had previously worked as a life model. After photographing her first subject, Sylviane, Odette found that the more images she accumulated, the more material she could show her prospective models to reassure them: “I think people can see there’s nothing degrading in my pictures.”

Nowadays the aesthetic of beauty is totally standardized, and where doesn’t reach reality, we (over)use photo editing. REALITY PROJECT is born to contrast this distorted view that is imposed on us daily by the media, and to demonstrate instead that the true beauty can be found in every body. ! It is a photographic project that portrays normal people, real and nude, leaving their body to express and convey their natural beauty without photo retouching, in all its shapes and sizes. ! The project, in progress, is an idea of Alessandro Viganò and Matteo Scarpellini, also known as ALMA PHOTOS, two photographers from Milan who always portray ordinary and “real” people. Hence the name of the project. TK:We mostly see women so far in this project.. Why?
AP: The project is 100% volunteer, so we can not put a filter on who signs up. Men, however, seem a lot more shy than women.
If we think in percentages, men candidates are less than 5%.

But under this flawless skin is a rotten deception, one deepened by a social-media saturated society. ‘Most of the bodies we see online on a daily basis aren’t even real, but rather enhanced or modified by technology to conform to a current, unsustainable trend,’ says LA-based photographer Julia SH, who is exhibiting powerful, textured portraits of bodies rarely depicted in 21st-century media, presented in museum-like frames. ‘In the US, what little nudity permitted is usually shown in a sexual context. Seeing nudes in a museum is one of the only exceptions to this. I created a series where I framed my models as sculptures and works of art in the hope that the viewer will suspend any judgments about whether they find the models sexually attractive or not, or whether their bodies are socially “acceptable”. The more body types we are exposed to, the more pragmatic our view will become.’

But why does Pittaluga think it's important for contemporary photography to offer visibility to all body types? ‘I hope that one day this kind of question will no longer exist,’she says. ‘I am focused on giving a voice and visibility to those who are not ortoo littlerepresented. It is very important to me to do everything to deconstruct this hegemony, I am committed to invoking all these fights until they are won.’ TK:What fascinates you about the genre of nude portraits?
AP: We’re fascinated by the different kind of bodies and people we meet.
Everytime a surprise. It’s a continuous challenge. Very stimulating.

Nobody is perfect, no-body is perfect.

TK: What was your most memorable moment shooting the REALITY PROJECT?
AP: The first shooting was Amazing.
It was like “the first time” for everybody. But we ended up very relaxed and the shooting went very smooth.
I remember a few shootings after when a girl went to another room to take her clothes off. That was very funny!
