helps some of the CGI (especially in the earlier seasons), and there are some relatively soft looking moments in that regard, though as things For its presentation in Ultra HD Game of Thrones The Complete Collection was finished on a 2K Digital Intermediate and upconverted to 4K. As noted earlier, though, even the darkest shots stand a chance of suddenly being punctuated by some really extreme HDR highlights. And when that happens, those highlights stand out so starkly against the HDR-enhanced darkness that they genuinely seem to burn off the screen. Update (Aug. 3): Asked for clarification about HBO Max’s feature set on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, an HBO Max spokesperson confirmed to Polygon on Wednesday that the service does not currently support 4K or HDR on PlayStation. We’ve edited the story to reflect this.

As stated prior the above video score and related critique of things down below are based solely upon my viewings against a cumulative average curve of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray presentations of HBO’s Game of Thrones: The Complete Collection. So here’s what this 33-disc set looks like with its protective sheath of plastic still protecting its contents. Nevertheless, if the ending falls somewhat short of expectations, the journey to get there is thrilling. Game of Thrones isn’t afraid to throw you a surprise or two each season, sometimes several. This is a series where it feels like anything can happen… and that is a rare and wonderful thing indeed. Dialogue Reproduction: Dialog levels are always loud, clear, intelligible and prioritized throughout the entire complete series here. You should have no problem hearing Hodor tell you to do something with something. If you don’t like fantasy, it’s the character drama that makes this series great. The heroes are deeply flawed. Most of the villains have a redeeming quality or two, or at least the odd empathetic moment. All of the characters are dimensional and complex. And over the course of the series, each grows and changes in unexpected ways. What’s more, this is very much an ensemble cast. Initially, the company includes Sean Bean ( The Lord of the Rings), Mark Addy ( The Full Monty), Lena Headey ( Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Emilia Clarke ( Solo), Kit Harington ( Spooks aka MI5), Peter Dinklage ( The Station Agent), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ( Nightwatch), Charles Dance ( Alien 3), and many more. New cast members are added each season, among them Gwendoline Christie ( Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Aidan Gillen ( The Wire), Jason Momoa ( Aquaman), Stephen Dillane ( John Adams), and Diana Rigg ( The Avengers). The last feature on the 4K Blu-rays are five deleted scenes. Watch them if you like, but it’s pretty easy to see in truth why all of them were cut out.

the 4K UHD releases of the first and last seasons) have a lot of salient information about cameras and DIs and other relevant datapoints, but the Now, HBO could start mastering its content in 4K HDR, like Netflix does with its live-action originals. That would allow the company to broadcast the existing 1080i standard-dynamic-range version of Game of Thrones via the linear HBO television channel, and deliver a 4K HDR feed to streaming viewers via HBO Go/Now. Up next are six really nice animated mini-features explaining the history and lore of Westeros, running to more than 25 minutes in total. I think that Game of Thrones, as a whole, benefitted from the Ultra HD treatment. The improvement isn’t night and day when compared to the 1080p rendering however, more often than not, it truly shines.Game of Thrones is the first TV series released on Blu-ray to incorporate Dolby Atmos. Having seen the series Blu-ray I looked forward to seeing what Atmos would bring to the experience. In listening to the various surround mixes I found them to be fair to moderately active in the use of overhead sounds but considering the source material that’s not a complete surprise. Game of Thrones has elements of action/adventure but much of the time is driven by dialog. The show features a variety of interior and exterior locations/sequences containing a host of recorded sounds/effects designed to replicate its environs. So that’s what you get in terms of special features. As you can clearly see, it’s a lot. And much of it is very good content indeed. The question you might be asking now is: What don’t you get? There are any number of standout elements in the 4K UHD presentations in terms of detail levels and especially fine detail levels. The often almost Flesh Tones: The skin tones all look natural throughout these 4K presentations. However, it all depends upon the particular scene and lighting too as to how much you’ll see.
