About this deal

Nostradamus’s predictions tended to be about general types of events, like natural disasters and conflict-related events that tend to occur regularly as time goes on. Between 1556 and 1567 he and his wife acquired a one-thirteenth share in a huge canal project, organised by Adam de Craponne, to create the Canal de Craponne to irrigate the largely waterless Salon-de-Provence and the nearby Désert de la Crau from the river Durance.

In fact, many scholars believe he paraphrased ancient end-of-the-world prophecies (mainly from the Bible) and then through astrological readings of the past, projected these events into the future. One was a translation of Galen, the Roman physician, and a second book, The Traite des Fardemens, was a medical cookbook for treating the plague and for the preparation of cosmetics, candies, jams — even a love potion. Chantal Liaroutzos, "Les prophéties de Nostradamus : suivez la Guide", in Réforme, Humanisme et Renaissance, 23 (1986), Lyon, entirely available on Persée Archived 24 November 2022 at the Wayback Machine. In his book, published in 2006, Reading claimed to have found something that others who had pored over Nostradamus had missed: that his quatrains are number-indexed to correlate with dates. Nostradamus predicted the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the Credit Crunch in 2008 and the floods in New Orleans, as well as the Iraq war, the Twin Towers disaster and the devastating Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 – and he foretold the future for decades to come.He first worked as a physician and began his medical practice in the 1530s, although he did so without a medical degree.

Hence the headline in the Guardian on Monday 5 July 1999: “Nostradamus wrong (please ignore if the world ended yesterday). His remark that “man will be eating man” because “the bushel of wheat will become so high”, for example, is being seen as a reference to the calamitous effects of the interruption to Ukrainian grain exports, although its supposed corollary, the rise of cannibalism, seems a bit far-fetched.

This last edition has two prefaces, the first is written in the form of a message to his son, and the second is addressed to Henry II.

The publication in 1983 of Nostradamus' private correspondence [65] and, during succeeding years, of the original editions of 1555 and 1557 discovered by Chomarat and Benazra, together with the unearthing of much original archival material [36] [66] revealed that much that was claimed about Nostradamus did not fit the documented facts.
