I'm at 25% of the book, and just started reading third year of Conan publication stories, but already I can see what "Northern Barbarian Hero Trope" Steven Erikson tried to dishevel with his character Karsa Orlong in Malazan Series; something which he failed by the end of the series, given the abundant similarities between the two. The noble savage (Conan) will use his mighty sword arm his unforgiving instincts and unmovable resolutions to solve problems where other men have failed.

My favorite stories in this are The Tower of the Elephant, The Slithering Shadow, Red Nails, and The Pool of the Black One. The book contains all of his stories published or not without editing or changes, the stories the great man wrote himself. Although certainly not the books of pure Conan stories that we all had hoped for, The Conan Chronicles is definitely a step in the right direction in Howard publishing. A handsome binding (regrettable use of the papyrus font notwithstanding), but I still prefer the Del Rey editions, which use Howard's original manuscripts, untouched by magazine editors or later, inferior authors like de Camp. In the longest tale I've read so far, Conan is beset by multiple adversaries in a wonderfully layered novella. His saga, which had led him to the throne of Aquilonia, was the basis of a whole cycle of hero-tales.

Thank the Gods, Conan is here to save the day, and it is with unfeigned relish that us readers get to see the evil witch get her comeuppance. Sadly, Howard killed himself in June 1936 when he learned that his beloved mother had fallen into a coma. Ancient wizards are resurrected, kingdoms are lost and won, battles are fought, slaves freed, rival priests conduct magic war over a terrifying artifact, fell tyranny is practiced by ambitious princes, there are ghouls, vampires, giant serpents, fell cults, wise women, and over all, majestic themes of revenge, justice, loyalty, perseverance, courage and love.
