About this deal

The binding on my copy has not adequately stood up to use of the engraved fold-out map of Lyra's city as chronicled in the trilogy, with its Zeppelin station on Oxpens Road and steam trains at Oxford station. Brought up in the cloistered world of Jordan College, Oxford, she finds herself embroiled in a cosmic war between Lord Asriel on one side, and a deity figure known as The Authority and his Regent, Metatron, on the other. A future together for the children and their developing love seemed to be closed in the last volume of the trilogy, The Amber Spyglass. In the book, a 24-year-old Scoresby and his daemon Hester have their first encounter with the race of intelligent polar bears who populate Pullman’s world when he lands his air ship in the harbour town of Novy Odense. Who wants to know more about the separate lives of Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde, before the great dramas began?

In the novella, Scoresby plays the role of wandering gunslinger or ronin, who blows into a town full of problems and gets caught right in the middle of them.Lyra's surname, Belacqua, is the name of a character in Dante's Divine Comedy, a soul in the ante-purgatory, representing those who wait until the last opportunity before turning to God.

Having created, then parted, Lyra and Will - two of the most enticing heroes in children's or any literature - what more can Pullman do with them? The western theme is even reflected in the title, a play on the title of the Sergio Leone film Once Upon A Time In The West. The books have more of an epic feel to the first trilogy, and could probably sustain even more seasons if the BBC were so inclined.Lyra is unruly and tomboyish and her complete disregard for her appearance and personal hygiene exasperates her adult carers. Lyra Belacqua ( / ˈ l aɪ r ə b ə ˈ l ɑː k w ə/ LY-rə bə- LAH-kwə), also known as Lyra Silvertongue, is the heroine of Philip Pullman's trilogy His Dark Materials. Together the two are drawn into a murder mystery that takes them far across Europe into Asia, where they uncover new information about the nature of Daemons and Dust. Lyra tries to help the daemon, but soon realises that she is being tricked, and that the witch wishes the kill her as revenge for the death of her lover, who perished in the conflict which took place towards the end of the His Dark Materials trilogy between Lord Asriel’s forces and the forces of heaven.

It transpires that Lyra's destiny is to be the second Eve and fall into the temptation of the serpent, represented by Mary Malone. Both Scoresby and Byrnison are fan favourite characters, and characters certainly wouldn’t complain about a miniseries or one-ff that gave them another chance to spend a little time with both. This tour will show you from the outside many of the key locations from Lyra’s Oxford and La Belle Sauvage, including the Bodley’s Library, The Covered Market, Jordan College and the Pitt Rivers Museum.

the slightest thing had the power to move her to pity and distress; it felt as if her heart was bruised for ever". Due to the nature of the plot, and the fact that the book is quite short in comparison to some of the other books in the series, it’s unlikely this could be stretched to a full season. He later realized it wasn't actually a person’s name, though due to the popularity of the character, it has now become one. She is excited to start recognising a pattern in the readings, and Pullman tells us that this discovery of a pattern is the "second thing she said to Will next day in the Botanic Garden", implying that the next day was Midsummer's Day, when she and Will would be sitting on the same bench in their separate worlds. If you delve among the inconsistencies and incomplete plot threads of The Amber Spyglass, you can find authentic grounds for a reprieve. This trilogy is the most likely candidate for a follow-up adaptation, both due to its length and its subject matter. And curiously this gentle, agnostic liberal-humanist visionary is resolute in imposing on the children an ethic harder than his reviled Christian predecessor CS Lewis would have dared in the Narnia books. He changes into many forms throughout the series, ranging from a dragon to an eagle, but his favourite forms are a snow-white ermine, a moth, a wildcat, and a mouse. It's unlikely that they’ll go this route, considering the wealth of source material on offer, but the world of His Dark Materials is so rich it must be tempting to build something new with all those puzzle pieces.
