About this deal

Many people, particularly children, push their finger into the traps or try to force them shut to see them in action – while this is tempting and completely harmless to you, this does waste the plant's energy and should be avoided. The sticky surface of the fly traps lasts for up to 4 months so won’t dry out throughout the summer. Pollination traps or trap-flowers are plant flower structures that aid the trapping of insects, mainly flies, so as to enhance their effectiveness in pollination. Flowers often have a sweet fragrance, but the flowers of the Arum plant, excude a rancid smell of ammonia and excrement.

However, I haven’t noticed any significant difference in seed set from self-pollinated flowers when compared to cross-pollinated flowers. Many people assume their plant has died and throw it away at this point, when actually it is still alive, just dormant.

If you inspect the pistil after fertilization, you should be able to see the pollen in contact with it.

To ensure it comes out of dormancy in spring, keep your Venus fly trap in the coolest room in the house and reduce watering, so the compost becomes drier than usual but doesn't dry out completely. Venus flytraps can be self-pollinated, meaning that you can fertilize the pistil with pollen from its own anthers. If you are growing your Venus flytraps outside, it is likely that an insect will do the work for you.

An alternative and less tedious way of pollinating the flowers is to just take two flowers that have receptive pistils and rub them together. An analysis of the scents emitted by Ceropegia dolichophylla showed the presence of spiroacetals which are rare in plants and common among insects.Etsy’s 100% renewable electricity commitment includes the electricity used by the data centers that host Etsy. If you wish to sexually propagate your own Venus Flytrap by collecting and sowing seeds, I recommend reading this article by Flytrapcare. The single species of Venus Flytrap - Dionaea muscipula - has been bred horticulturally for many years.
