About this deal

Climate change is the most consequential threat multiplier for women and girls, with far- reaching impacts on new and existing forms of gender inequities… The cumulative and gendered consequences of climate change and environmental degradation breach all aspects of the rights of women and girls. That’s changing – with momentum building over the previous decade. According to the Office of National Statistics, in 2018 about 17% of farmers were women, up from 7% in 2007-2008. In higher education courses, women agricultural students now outnumber men almost two to one, making up 64% of the 2017-2018 graduates. One-third of female farmers in India are unpaid laborers on family farms owned by their parents, husbands or in-laws, according to OXFAM. Indian women own just 12.8% of the country’s land. The Lancashire County Council Farm was set up in 1890 to provide training in practical and theoretical agriculture. The first intake of students were all local women, who attended classes in butter and cheese making.

A similar outcome was found by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in the coffee sector in Indonesia, where productivity increased 131 percent for groups which trained both men and women, whereas it increased 95 percent for men- only groups. In other studies increased time spent on domestic chores due to climate change has also been associated with girls being taken out of school to help families, exacerbating gender inequalities in education levels.
