About this deal

As you might imagine, we don’t want the scraper bevel angle to be too blunt nor too steep. Somewhere in the middle will work better. Pen Making Accessories Bushings Tubes & Refills Drill Bits Clips Tools & Assembly Adhesives Finishing If you feel this and that edge is even across the tip, then the scraper is sharp and ready to use. If you’re not feeling the burr or it is uneven, continue honing the edge. Scraping the surface of a wood bowl is just like the word says, scraping. The scraper comes in at a more steep angle with a blunt solid edge to the wood grain and tears the fibers away with more or less a controlled colliding action.

I’d highly recommended having a few different sizes available because each turning situation usually calls for a particular sized area to match.

Scraper sharpening, of all the woodturning tools, is probably the easiest tool to sharpen. But there are a few details to be aware of during the sharpening process.

Instead, I will raise my tool rest just a bit above center and then angle my tool downward at about a 10 to 20-degree angle. These are your typical rubber spatulas. They have sturdy handles with orange silicone ends. The ends are flexible so you can easily use these for bowl scraping. You can also mix, stir, scrape, scoop, and sere with these so you have some additional flexibility. The silicone materials are heat-resistant up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit so these scrapers will stand up to hot pans and bowls quite well. In this set, one piece is silicone and the other piece is nylon.

Choosing the Best Bowl Scraper

When a continuous smooth surface appears along the entire bevel, the sharpening process is complete. Honing The Edge

This set comes with a large aqua-colored scraper and a small gray scraper. They both are pretty awesome and can work for a multitude of purposes and needs. These scrapers are made with quality materials. They are sturdy and durable, with just the right amount of flex. An angle around 65 to 60-degrees works for me, however, you might find a different angle works better for you. In wood bowl turning there is a tool hierarchy. The bowl gouge is the king of wood bowl turning tools.

Uses for Bowl Scrapers

Presenting a scraper angle, this extreme into turning wood fibers will not do much besides scratch the surface. Within only a few moments, the skinny tip would be dull and curl under. Ideal Scraper Bevel Angle If it takes longer to clean the bevel, I will shorten the time between return visits to the wheel and hand hone or burnish the rest of the time. Scraper Sharpening Wrap Using a round nose scraper, sometimes called a bowl scraper takes a little time to get used to. I can tell you when I first started, I wasn’t too fond of this tool.

This cutting area has a continuously curved bevel under the cutting edge. The small gray scraper is designed to work with pots specifically so it can even withstand slightly higher heat overall. This bowl scraper is soft and flexible but also sturdy and durable. It works well for cleaning, mixing, scraping, and pastry cutting as well. This final option is a great option as well. It’s a simple and affordable single bowl scraper that is well-made. The downside to this one is that there just isn’t a lot of descriptive information but it remains highly-rated by those who have tried it out and liked it. I don’t currently know of any wood bowl turners that solely use a traditional round nose scraper to turn an entire bowl, but why not? It might not be the most efficient method, and somewhat extreme, but it could be done. Tool Hierarchy
