Retrieved 8 December 2020. Clay minerals can be classified as 1:1 or 2:1. A 1:1 clay would consist of one tetrahedral sheet and one octahedral sheet, and examples would be kaolinite and serpentinite. A 2:1 clay consists of an octahedral sheet sandwiched between two tetrahedral sheets, and examples are talc, vermiculite, and montmorillonite. The layers in 1:1 clays are uncharged and are bonded by hydrogen bonds between layers, but 2:1 layers have a net negative charge and may be bonded together either by individual cations (such as potassium in illite or sodium or calcium in smectites) or by positively charged octahedral sheets (as in chlorites). When reduced soils are exposed to air, oxidation of sorbed Fe( II) by O 2 is expected to occur, which may lead to the formation of polynuclear Fe( III)-oxyhydroxide clusters and surface precipitates. It’s not just those frilly traits, though. These counters also have a nice weight to them, without spilling over into hefty annoyance. They are sold in 200 and 400 options, too, but those get ridiculously large and heavy to lug around, less you desire a misaligned spine of some capacity. Lastly, I appreciate the clear distinction of the pattern of the marker and the inlay depicting the value of the chip. This is a small detail since you’ll be counting a chip based on its color rather than the printed denomination, but for players first encountering these markers, it makes it a breeze to learn the value of these fellas. Previous studies have also investigated the sorption of Fe 2+ to different clay minerals at various Fe-loadings. 14,30 Collectively, the literature results suggested that depending on the Fe-loading, various Fe( II)- and Fe( III)-containing solids formed. In our low Fe-loading samples, over half of Fe( II) was oxidized to Fe( III), from which a large fraction was incorporated into newly formed clay minerals. This result shows that clay minerals can play an important role in the mobility of Fe 2+ under anoxic conditions. Effects of aeration of anoxic sorption samples on Fe speciation To understand the effects of O 2-exposure on the speciation of Fe in clay suspensions (Syn-1) that were anoxically equilibrated for 1 or 30 days with Fe 2+, the anoxic suspensions were exposed to ambient air for 24 hours. Aeration resulted in a further increase in percent Fe sorption (see Fig. 4a, b and Table S2 †), despite a drop in suspension pH (between 0.8 and 3.1 pH values) as a result of hydrolysis of Fe 3+ (Table S3 †). Due to the high O 2 sensitivity of Fe 2+ at near-neutral pH, rapid oxidation of adsorbed and dissolved Fe 2+, hydrolysis of Fe 3+, and precipitation of Fe( III)-(oxyhydr)oxides may occur. The chips themselves are quite expressive, delightful pieces. They have a nice heft and come in various denominations (1s, 5s, 10s, 20s, 50s, 100s, 500s, 2000s, depending on the set).
