About this deal

With beautiful photography throughout, Gardening at Longmeadow is an essential book for gardening enthusiasts of all skill levels. In my opinion, it isn’t a book to turn to for quick reference or if you’re looking for lists of tasks to do but then it wasn’t designed with this in mind and most gardeners have those books already anyway.

Much like his style on TV this is a relaxing read, the information is passed on in his skilled conversational manner. He’ll talk through the essential techniques and more complex processes, accompanied by easy-to-follow, step-by-step photography.A year ago his garden, Longmeadow, became the location for the filming of Gardeners’ World and this book takes the reader through a typical gardening year there. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. this is when the falling light levels coupled with heat make the rich colours like plum, caramel, purple and ruby red glow richly. The plants featured are those growing in his garden and he shares his knowledge and tips and doesn’t mind writing about his mistakes and disasters, which makes any gardener feel much better about their own shortcomings. The planting is modern and based upon a matrix of the soft grass stipa tenuissima with the tulip acuminata, with its long ottoman-like petals in spring and tulbaghia and verbena bonariensis flowering in summer.

Pauline has taken the words right out of my mouth 🙂 I will have to have a sneaky peek somewhere on my travels. He touches on a little of every topic a gardener can hope for, each one packed generously with know how. His passion for gardening and the natural world are evident and he has the ability to make ordinary, daily events in the garden seem magical.I’ve not so far had the opportunity to go through the book, but from the quick look through it, I’m sure I’m going to enjoy it and learn lots. Planting both acknowledges the koranic dictates of fruit with pomegranate, olive and citrus trees but also very British crab apples. A firm favourite with viewers, Monty’s infectious enthusiasm for plants, attention to the finer details of gardening technique and easy charm have seen the ratings soar. In spring it is the home for all our most intense tulips and in Summer tender plants such as dahlias, gingers, bananas, cannas, tithonias, zinnias and sunflowers are grown on and added as soon as the risk of frost has passed.

The result was a two part series ‘Paradise Gardens for the BBC and a book, with Derry Moore, with the same title. He has written a weekly gardening column for the Daily Mail since 2004, and published over 20 books, including the bestsellers Down to Earth, Nigel: My Family and Other Dogs, and My Garden World. After a short introduction that includes what the property looked like when he purchased it, the book is organized into monthly chapters and filled with photos. Here Monty invites us into the garden at Longmeadow, to show us how he created this beautiful garden, and how we can do the same in our own. Invites us into the garden at Longmeadow to introduce us to the garden from the earliest snowdrops of January through the first splashes of colour in the Spring Garden, the electric summer displays of the Jewel Garden, the autumn harvest in the orchard, and on to a Christmas feast sourced from the vegetable gardens.

But over the past ten years it has slowly evolved into a traditional, but essentially floral, cottage garden, filled with blowsy, soft colours but also containing fruit trees, rhubarb, gooseberries and some herbs all mingled in together. It will inspire you to achieve a balanced, healthy garden of your own, that's spilling with produce and full colour all year round. I bought a hundred 6ft chestnut stakes and quartered them (chestnut cleaves beautifully down the grain) to make 400.Alongside his rich, personal experiences at Longmeadow, Monty describes the individual plants coming into their own in the floral and vegetable gardens and talks you through key tasks, from composting and lawn maintenance to topiary clipping and fruit pruning. The Jewel garden really hits its stride in August and September despite the shortening days because the nights are warm and dahlias, bananas, zinnias, tithonia, sunflowers, helianthus, nicotiana and cosmos are flowering exuberantly. The first starts at the end of May and continues to mid July and then there is a noticeable shift as the light changes slightly and the whole garden heats up until September. Following the cycle of the seasons, this book introduces readers to the garden from the earliest snowdrops of January through the first splashes of colour in the spring, the electric summer displays of the jewel garden, the autumn harvest in the orchard, and on to a Christmas feast sourced from the vegetable gardens.
