Buttons and things will likely be images. You need to just replace those images with you own, with the same title as the ones you replace.
So, if you ind the images folder, download it to your computer, open it in an image editing program (Adobe Elements will be fine) and either create new ones or paint over them in a paint brush that just changes the colour. Then upload those to your store.

Just changing the buttons can really help your store look a little less standard. I do believe 'Buy' buttons work best in orange though, psychologically...have a good look at the images to see what you might easily change. Check the emails the system is generating so that you can replace any stray Magento ones with your own. (right click on the images will give you a clue as to where they are located in your files)
Background colours and text can be changed in the CSS files, it may be worth seeing if a design company can do just that work for you. But thats not a biggy. You may feel conident enough to do that yourself by changing one element at a time.
One other thing, on checkout have you changed the spelling of 'deliver' from the default one as that was displaying wrong on mine.
Going through the UK and US translate files can help too. We changed a number of those to be more natural.
If you do as much work on it yourself as you can then your will feel more and more confident.
using the magento forums solved most of my issues, but there was a fair amount of digging to do. But its a great way to get your own website working without spending loads of money.
One last thing, on the bottom link you have it wrong:
