About this deal

I don’t use white paint on walls very often but I do regularly use it for skirtings, doors, windows and ceilings. My go-to white paint for skirtings, doors and windows is Farrow & Ball ‘ Pointing’, which has just enough warmth in it so that it doesn’t seem so stark against a coloured wall. For ceilings, I regularly use Farrow & Ball ‘ Wimborne White’, which has a touch of yellow that gives ceilings a warmer glow than a bright white would.

These undertones are amplified by the type of natural light a room gets, and can even be affected by the contents of a room which will reflect onto the walls and change the appearance of the paint hue, something worth thinking about when looking into white bedroom ideas.

Because it’s water-based, this paint will also never yellow with age, making it a perfect paint for any areas that might not get a lot of sunlight, such as skirting boards behind furniture and the inside of cupboards. It also comes in a great range of colours, although mostly pastel or neutral shades. This satinwood paint from Leyland is an excellent all-rounder. Suitable for almost all projects, it’s easy to use, long-lasting and durable. While it will need two coats to get the fullest coverage, a little goes a very long way, and as you don’t need to use primer, it’s great for those on a budget. It can be applied with either a paint brush or a foam roller, and getting a smooth surface with no streaks or drips is easy, even for beginners. Although it should always be applied in a well-ventilated area, it has a much weaker odour than other oil-based satinwood paints. In perfect conditions (not lashing with torrential rain and with temperatures over 10ºC), Granocryl wil be dry to the touch within one to two hours and capable of being recoated within four to six hours – an important fact seeing as, depending on the substrate you’re applying it to, two coats is generally the expected norm to achieve an ideal finish.

Probably the most well-known white is Pure Brilliant White, a staple of new homes everywhere on the planet,' Marianne goes on to say. 'Pure Brilliant White contains optical brighteners which make it reflect more light and so it’s perfect when you want a super bright white as a blank canvas for your walls and ceiling.' Choosing from our own range of paints (naturally), my new favourite shade of white is called ‘ Cloth’. It positively glows in almost any setting and it has plenty of pigment, which makes it feel substantial and it really does bring joy to both rooms and people.

Off-White Paint Colours with Red Undertones

Even a hint of colour in a white paint can change its feel significantly – and that’s usually down to personal taste. Some people are drawn to warmer colours, others to cooler colours; choosing an off-white can help a room feel more welcoming and characterful in a very subtle way' Dominic explains. 'If you’ve got other paint colours within the same room, it’s always worth considering how they interact together. One tip is that for south facing rooms with lots of light, you can get away with pretty much any colour, but for north facing rooms with less light you should consider opting for warmer undertones to balance the cool light and make the room feel inviting.' Satinwood paint has risen in popularity over the last few years. Its medium-sheen gives a more contemporary look to doors, windows and skirting boards than traditional gloss paint. Most satinwood paints are also a great choice if you’re looking to paint a radiator or any exposed metal pipework, and can even be used on kitchen and bathroom walls. Mould-resistant and very reasonably priced to boot, it’s no wonder that Sandtex is such a popular choice. For those of you dreading the task ahead, Sandtex is likely to make your job that little bit easier. Painting ceilings has the potential to cause a lot of mess and potentially damage your precious carpets and furnishings beyond repair, so it pays to be prepared. Even specialist paints that are designed not to drip or spatter will do exactly that if your brush or roller is overloaded.

Last but not least in the prep camp, seal and prime your walls with an external sealer or primer (available from all DIY outlets) – this will ensure the absolute best surface for painting on. Anything else? Just remember, the placement of furniture around the room can change the appearance of the paint, impacting how the colour is reflected on the walls, so be mindful of this when planning your scheme.' As the name suggests, Johnstone’s really does produce a paint solely for the important purpose of keeping your concrete garage floor clean, neat and, naturally, non-slippy. For this reason warm white paints with undertones of yellow or red are generally recommended for north-facing rooms, where they'll look a lot less 'creamy' than they would painted in a room with a south-facing aspect. Our Colour Scales collection provides a wonderful solution for creating a light fresh design scheme that gives the illusion of space, ‘Masquerade’ works beautifully alongside ‘Masquerade Mid’ and ‘Masquerade Light’ to create an elegant and welcoming scheme in a small space.'Choosing the perfect off-white paint depends on the type of light the room receives and what direction it’s facing. When decorating north-facing rooms, avoid off-whites with a green or grey base as these will make the room seem darker. Instead, choose yellow-based, creamy neutrals to bounce as much light around the room as possible. Farrow & Ball’s ‘ White Tie' and ‘ Tallow’ are perfect tones for this.
