When an exploration of lifeforms on an uncharted planet goes very wrong, Buzz ( Chris Evans) makes a critical error trying to escape the planet. Thanks to him, his entire crew is stranded 4.2 million light-years from Earth with their hyperspeed crystal destroyed. Meet Izzy – After young Izzy and her family (including her brother Maurice) move in next door to Buzz, the adorable, talkative girl bursts into Buzz’s home, warms up to Sox, and asks Buzz a lot of questions. An alternative approach would been to integrated Buzz a little more into the family moments instead of him looking in through the doorway. It results in a disconnect with them that also means the emotional triggers later in the film aren’t as powerful as they could have been. Polly– Buzz relives childhood memories when he visits an aeronautic museum in which his father is memorialized. There, he finds Polly, his dad’s robot companion bird, who possesses a very revealing recorded message meant for Buzz!

Lightyear claims to be the "definitive origin story" of Buzz Lightyear, but really it's only the origin of the hero who inspired the toy. You won't be learning anything about the history of Buzz before he met Woody and co, even if there are Toy Story nods to be found everywhere. The emotional side of things is also why the pacing feels a little off as it clearly wanted to give important moments enough time to hit home, but this does result in a slower build up. On balance, it’s probably better that they went this way, but some of the time dilation stuff could have been sped through with a shorter montage. That being said, Lightyear is a blast in the latter half and the whole “the biggest battle in life is with yourself” is a clever twist. For some, this is going to be canon breaking, which could be why there’s such a divided opinion on the film. Now that Pixar has got around to it, it's even more of a surprise that it's not really a spin-off in the traditional sense, because it's not about the Buzz we know.There are times you'll forget you're watching an animation, given how realistic the landscapes are and how much detail has gone into the set design. Whatever your feelings on the fact that Lightyear is the first Pixar movie to get a cinema release instead of, say, Turning Red, it absolutely makes the most of its big-screen canvas.
