About this deal

Some terminology that may be used in this description includes: First Edition In book collecting, the first edition is the earliest published form of a book. A poor condition book can still make a good reading copy but is generally not collectible unless the item is very scarce. Covers 4 generations of upper-class life in England from the 1880s to the 1940s, featuring Lucinda of Melbourne.

Lucinda spurns the love of a distinguished family friend, Tony Duff, to marry the dashing aide-de-camp to the Governor, Hugo Brayford. This is the story of a beautiful woman set mainly in Melbourne, Victoria and England, from the early 1900s to the Second World War.First Canadian edition first printing of a very good plus hardcover with one small colour fade, in a very good dustjacket with 2 small closed tears and a crease along the top on the front cover and minor wear at the extremities. Wendy Hughes is without doubt one of Australia’s great beauties and has proven her ability as an actress in numerous films and long-running television series. When Hugo dies and Pat rebuffs her proposal of marriage, Lucinda receives comfort from Hugo’s eccentric brother Paul.

The events than focus on his relationships with his family, his friends, his marriage to a Vane family member, and WW2. The mini-series was produced in-house shortly before tax concessions gave a boost to television drama budgets, benefiting mini-series like All the Rivers Run (1983), Bodyline (1984) and A Fortunate Life (1985).The family's social ambitions lead to conflicts between Lucinda and her parents over the attentions of Tony Duff. She sits alone in the small enclave of culture and tradition, rapt with the richness that so unexpectedly holds out against the gloom. One gets a sense of the mores of English county life, early century; its traditions, its rebellions. After six months of detention and six months of imprisonment, he receives flowers from his former wife, which appears to heal a deep and long-standing wound. As an achievement in story-telling, I found the Australian section more entertaining, as Fred Vane achieves his goal of poverty to riches, while his wife lives down the ignominy of her early married life by purchasing a place in the society she covets.

Fred and Julie start out their marriage terribly poor and unhappy and from there the book follows them as they struggle to build their fortune and Julie climbs her way to the top of the social ladder. Boyd was an expatriate novelist, memoirist, and poet who spent most of his life after World War One in Europe, primarily Britain. We follow the couple to England where the rest of the book takes place and the plot focuses on Hugo's family, lucindas social life which becomes somewhat of a prison, their infidelity, and WWI.We're introduced to William Vane (lucindas grandfather) who has to move from England to Australia after he develops and unsavory reputation. These would-be aristocrats were parvenues, nouveaux riches brought to their station by ambition rather than by history, breeding, and education. Fast forward to their second child, Lucinda, on the eve of her 18th birthday, experiencing her first romance, and then her marriage to English man Hugo Brayford.
