About this deal

Look for fenders that have some contouring or a rounded shape, if they are too flat they won't offer all that much protection. Most bike fenders are made from either plastic or metal, with some utilizing both. Most bike fenders these days are made out of polycarbonate plastic, which is flexible, yet durable, and typically mounts more easily than metal versions. The struts aren’t as stiff as metal fenders, however, which means they can rub or jostle over bumpy terrain. There are fenders / mudguards which do provide more coverage at a similar price - even within SKS’s own range, such as the SKS Longboards. If wet weather protection is most important to you, the choice between the two is pretty obvious. But there will be those who prefer the tidier looks of the Bluemels Basics.

This has been a fun design challenge and I hope it helps other speed pedelac owners get the most out of their bikes year-round. Wet and muddy conditions can hamper your road cycling experience, covering both you and your bike in debris from tyre spray. We hope that the information we’ve outlined in this guide will help you make a smart decision on which mudguards to buy- potentially enabling you to shop by bike type if, for example, you’re looking for gravel bike mudguards or cyclocross mudguards specifically. You’ll be surprised at how much difference they make. Unless it’s raining hard, most of the wetness you feel when riding without mudguards is likely to have come from the road and your tyres. Mudguards keep you drier and more comfortable. There are a few options to choose from when it comes to mudguards, and which of these is right for your bike depends on the amount of protection you're needing - as well as what will practically fit your bike frame. If you've never used mudguards, you’ll probably be surprised at how much difference they make. A lot of the water that covers you when you ride in the rain doesn’t come directly from the clouds, it’s thrown up from the road surface by your tyres, especially in lovely British drizzle. The Pacific Northwest is famous for its wet weather, so it's no surprise that Portland Design Works makes some of the best fenders out there. Made from anodised aluminium, the PDW Full Metal fenders offer full wrap coverage and laser-etched graphics. SKS’s Bluemels Basic fenders / mudguards do a reasonably good job of keeping you dry. Their coverage isn’t as long as some - and our tester did find that you get spray over your feet from the front wheel and anyone following behind will still get a coating. Yes, these cost a lot and do the same job as the SKS Chromoplastics, but they are very lovely to look at. Enough to make rainy days seem a bit brighter.

These mudguards are useful for commuting bikes, especially where clearance might be an issue because of frame design and/or wide tyres. The simplicity of fitting makes them attractive, and they can be whipped off in a minute too. While these mudguards don't provide 100% protection compared to full-length options, they do keep a surprisingly large amount of spray off. To stop your toes from clashing with the stay end caps, the Full Metal fenders / mudguards use a single stay design that is kept higher on front fender than a double stay type. It made low speed manoeuvring easier, although there was still toe overlap on my bike but that's the bike and not the mudguards fault. Clip-on mudguards usually don’t wrap as much of the wheel as full-length mudguards, nor have the sides or front rubber flap. This means they don’t keep as much rain and spray off your body or bike. However, they do keep most of the water off and can make a huge difference on wet roads. They can easily be removed and stored in the garage during the summer.

Where you’re planning on riding will have some bearing on what type of mudguards to look for. Portland Design Works

Made from robust polypropylene, these German mudguards have a feeling of quality about them. The front is easy to fit via rubber straps which loop around the fork. Having said that, even clip-on long-coverage mudguards aren’t as easy to fit as many short-coverage options. Also, because they tend to fit closer to the tyre than short-coverage guards, you may need to be more cautious of trail debris. If your bike has the mounting points, these are the best mudguards you can buy. Full-length, and held in place by steel struts and stainless hardware, once chopped and bolted into place, they’ll provide exceptional coverage. You even get a traditional rear reflector. Generally speaking, there are three types of gravel mudguard: short-coverage clip-on mudguards (available for either the front or, more commonly, the rear), full-coverage clip-on mudguards and full-coverage mudguards that require eyelets.Wiggle and Chain Reaction Cycles’ LifeLine components brand makes inexpensive mudguards for bikes with the necessary bolts and these clip-on guards for those without. They have quality stainless steel fixtures with bolts to fix them to the stays, making them easy to set up and adjust. Equally neat is the fitting, which took us no more than 20-seconds to complete – including the time it took us to read the instructions.

If your road bike doesn't have mudguard mounts, there are still a lot of mudguards options available to you.Riding your bike in the winter without a mudguard is likely to result in you turning up at your destination like you've been dragged through the proverbial hedge. However, mudguards aren't just about keeping your clothes clean - they also help to keep your feet and legs dry and warm, as well as protecting your bike's frame and components. Mountain bikes, because of the huge variety of design thanks to factors like suspension and huge tyres, need a mudguard fitted very high above the wheel. The solution is a rear mudguard that clips onto the seatpost so the height above the wheel can be adjusted, and a front mudguard that's attached to the down tube.
