About this deal

You should always keep the primer away from fire as it is highly flammable and the can may explode if it gets too hot.

Etching Primer is used on non ferrous and galvanised surfaces to help with adhesion of subsequent coats. Etching primer effectively ‘eats into’ the ‘galv’ (without completely removing all the zinc protection of course), to prime and protect the surface at the same time.

2 Pack Etch Primers

A primer usually acts as some kind of protective or preparatory coating. Different primers can have different purposes. This often depends on the surface to which it is being applied. In general a primer does one or more of the following:

Unlike Stainless Steels Galvanised Steels have a problem, in that the galvanised coat will start to break down if left outside in the garden. It gives a layer of protection before a top coat is applied and will still adhere to surfaces that already have traces of rust. Ferrous metals contain iron and are pretty much anywhere you look. Examples are stainless steel, carbon steel, cast iron, steel and wrought iron. Known for their tensile strength ferrous metals are widely are used in architecture, engineering and industry – from large structures like bridges, to engines, household appliances and small engineering components. Always ventalate your work area - Good ventelation is nessasery when woking with aerosol spray paint not only to clear the fumes, but good air circulation helps the drying process. You can now apply the Etch Primer to the substrate, only the thinnest coat is required and a second coat is not necessary. It is also possible for residues to leech out of the moulding and /or paint to leech into the moulding. Primer is the basic foundation of a fine paint job, so don’t skimp. It takes about 4 litres of unthinned primer for the average car, so keep going around it until you’re sure you have it covered well. Sealers are usually lacquer based, so they’re easy to apply and dry very fast. Primer-sealers are generally enamel based. They can be used to prime bare metal and as a sealer under any enamel paint job.

Once applied the Etch Primer needs to be left to dry, both to allow the etching process to work and to allow the evaporation of the solvents contained within the paint. To provide a coating which can be sanded to give a smooth, sound base on to which colour coat can be sprayed. Wait for the first coat to dry for about three minutes before repeating for a second coat. You may also want to do a third coat when the second coat dries if you think this is necessary.

What’s an Undercoat?

No matter what kind of paint is going to be used, use the recommended multi purpose primer with the appropriate thinner (where applicable – ask for advice at your local automotive paint store). Mix them according to the directions, then stir thoroughly. For primer, adjust the spray gun so the spray pattern is about 200 mm wide, 300 mm from the gun head. All Etch Primers need to be left for a minimum of 24 hours at a temperature of 18 - 20 degrees Celsius to dry properly. So primers and undercoats do serve different purposes. You may find some coatings that are suitable as both primer and undercoat for certain jobs or surface types.

Each of which will provide the right basis for your paint restoration project. Spray primers & etch primers Etch Primer is a paint that is designed to physically bond itself to the substrate to which it is applied. After the primer has dried for 20 or 30 minutes, the tape can be removed. Although it’s possible to go right ahead and sand the car (dry) and follow with the paint, it’s a good idea to allow the primer to cure for several days, or even a couple of weeks if possible. The primer will shrink as it dries, so allow time for it to cure completely before painting. Commercial applications of galvanised steel apply a protective coat of paint to the metal by powder or dip coating. Red oxide primer protects against rust and corrosion. Use it on ferrous metals likely to be exposed to the elements especially cold air, damp and humidity. It is widely used in the industrial and agricultural industries for structural steel work, outdoor equipment and railings, gates etc.Whilst this allows for complex parts to be moulded it can leave a surface that is 'slippery' and does not accept paint. Many ferrous metals are also prone to rust due (the rust level will depend on the amount of iron and whether other metals such as chromium have been added). Non Ferrous Metals
