Gill, Michael (2017). Edmund Hillary: A Biography. Nelson, NZ: Potton & Burton. pp.202, 257. ISBN 978-0-947503-38-3. Following Moro’s return to Kathmandu, hope persisted for over a week as search efforts continued. Lt. Col. Madan K.C., known for his daring helicopter rescue on Mount Everest in 1996, conducted multiple search missions but yielded inconclusive results due to unfavorable conditions. The ground party comprising Sherpas and Kazakh climbers confirmed the deaths of Boukreev and Sobolev on January 4. In 1997, Boukreev was killed in an avalanche during a winter ascent of Annapurna in Nepal. [1] Boukreev's companion, Linda Wylie, edited his memoirs and published them in 2002 under the title, Above the Clouds: The Diaries of a High-Altitude Mountaineer.

More details are coming to light regarding the avalanche on Annapurna that has apparently taken the lives of climber Anatoli Boukreev and videographer Dimitri Sobolev, who earlier was reported to have been a trekker. The men were making a rare winter attempt on the 8,078 meter Himalayan giant. Despite the disagreements, Boukreev’s enduring legacy as a mountaineer and his commitment to the mountains remain undeniable. That year, his team was one of several expeditions trying to reach the peak. At first, everything went well: the weather was favorable and didn’t show signs of worsening. Boukreev was ahead of his team, reaching the summit at around 1 p.m., where he waited for the others. By 2.30 p.m. only two out of eight climbers had reached the peak. Concerned about the others, Boukreev went down to find out whether there were some problems. During the helicopter fly-over, no signs of the missing men were found. Bad weather prevented the helicopter pilot from an attempt to land. Another rescue helicopter flight has tentatively been scheduled for Wednesday morning local time (Tuesday night PST).

Jon Krakauer (42) – journalist on assignment from Outside magazine; an accomplished technical climber, but had no experience in climbing peaks over 8,000m Both this climb and ones that followed over the next few years helped Boukreev gain recognition as a skilled climber and experienced mountaineering guide. a b c d e Bouchard, Jay (12 June 2017). Unexpectedly, a massive cornice broke loose from the Annapurna’s Western Wall and fell down the 800 m (2,600 ft) long couloir. The avalanche swept Moro down the mountainside, eventually leaving him just above their tent at Camp I (5,200 m or 17,100 ft). Remarkably, Moro managed to remain near the top of the avalanche debris and, after a few minutes, extricated himself from the snow.Just three weeks after receiving the award, Boukreev began his attempt to climb the south face of Annapurna I with fellow climber Simone Moro and cinematographer Dimitri Sobolev who would document their attempt. Upon completing his secondary education in 1975, Boukreev enrolled in Chelyabinsk University for Pedagogy, specializing in physics, and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1979. During this time, he also undertook a coaching program focused on cross-country skiing.
