The ground slopes away more steeply as the path wanders through the heather, past boulders and outcrops of granite on the way down to a prominent gap – the col between Slieve Lamagan and Slieve Binnian. The western Mournes are much quieter than their eastern counterparts and walkers who prefer a quieter, more reflective hike will be at home here. Hen Mountain is an ideal venue for family groups; it is less than 400m high, sits close to a car park and has a summit with four rugged tors that are a magnet for young walkers. Eagle Mountain (638m) is the highest of the western contingent and is often cited as their favourite peak by Mourne veterans. The view from its summit is one of the best in the country, offering a panoramic display of most of the higher peaks. The western Mournes can be conveniently accessed from Leitrim Lodge car park, BT34 5XX, Sandbank Road car park, BT34 5XU, or from any of the car parks near Spelga Dam, including Ott car park, BT34 5XL.

OpenStreetMap is an opensource global crowd sourced map. It is better at showing footpaths than the OS in some places. It has been proposed that the Mourne Mountains be made Northern Ireland's first national park. [47] [48] The plan has been subject to controversy because of the area's status as private property, with over 1,000 farmers based in the proposed park, [48] and also because of fears over the impact on local communities, bureaucracy and house prices.
