About this deal

Of course I like to have a good balance which I have more or less managed to achieve but with just a slight tip away from bright. I founded Audio Appraisal a few years ago and continue to regularly update it with fresh content. An avid vinyl collector and coffee addict, I can often be found at a workbench tinkering with a faulty electronic device, tweaking a turntable to extract the last bit of detail from those tiny grooves in the plastic stuff, or relaxing in front of the hi-fi with a good album. A musician, occasional producer and sound engineer, other hobbies include software programming, web development, long walks and occasional DIY. Thanks OP for the write up! I’ve used the 740ml for a few years and a few months ago got a 750sh and found the differences similar to you. Both very close. More detail with the ML, a touch warmer with the SH. Lastly there is one setting which gets more important called Azimuth. You again cant adjust it on the table unless you get an adjustable headshell. Its the angle of the stylus viewed from the front. You would again need a microscope but its more reliable of an installation.

So my question is if I buy the VM95L/H does that mean I don’t have to mess about with screws etc, I just take the Red headshell off and put the VM95L/H headshell on, then recalibrate accordingly? I don’t know all the TT terminology but hopefully you know what I mean? If this is any help, my VM540ML sounded terrific right out of the box, depressingly bad at about 5 or 6 hours, then started to improve dramatically at around 10 hours. My displays are helpful when I look at other's recorded music and I see the wave form "fill" my screen and often look like a flat top hair cut near or at 0db, compressed and limited probably to -0.5db. right to the edge. This happens way too often in pop music. I am also loving the SH and my experience with it ( had it about 4 months now ) pretty much matches yours. OMG am I embarrassed. Many may have noticed that I trashed the sound of both files and by extension the album itself. My system may not be at the same level as most of your readers but it's honestly not that bad-plus I have the 2m Blue in my turntable. The albums- PJ Harvey- Dry, George Benson- the Shape of Things to Come, Sonic Youth- Dirty, Nina Simone- Sings the Blues. I've read the built in pre on the 1500c is over 300pf capacitance, thus making it unsuitable for the 100-200pf AT spec. It will work fine but could have a tilted up mid treble region.’’

Being new to terms of capacitance (and having much more to learn), can anyone shed light on why Yamaha would spec their phono stage at 470pF? And I've no doubt I'm missing a lot, but if capacitance is of such importance why aren't those specs easier to find? Maybe better suited for another thread. I asked myself: but why has the Grado Reference Platinum Wood MI no problems with capacity? An engineer explained it to me. What I have understand so far it's due to different coil windig. But that's another story... Strength- Wholesome delivery, tons of heart, presents mid-bass (toms, bass guitar, male vocals) with authoritative swagger and punch, excellent harmonics, lush emotion, rich tonal beauty. The stereo- Technics SL1500C turntable w/ KAB damper, Graham Slee Era Gold V preamp, Yamaha A-S801 amp, JBL L82 speakers, Rythmik L12 sub. Not matter how other people have his own setup on phono preamplifier, results can show where is weak point. ARTA need a compesation to calibrate input signal as all measuring tools. Most of that independent measurements on audio cards are from sound card outputs and most of modern sound cards have prety nice flat frequency responses on its output. On ARTA handbook you can to see complete "how to" chapter with simple instruction for calibrating sound card inputs.

File 1 initially sounded more "exciting", but rapidly moved to fatiguing, too bright and edgy, harsh sounding.
