What is more the story is brutally honest, the author does not shy away from the harsh and brutal realities of her obsession, prostitution and how far she was willing to go to feed her awful habit. “Zoo Station” also offers an insight into the youth culture of 1970s West Berlin. She describes the popularity of drugs, the influence of music and subcultures on young people. It shows how many of them were involved in hard drugs, and their sacrifice they were willing to take to get them, no matter of the consequences. The pressure got too much, and all teachers and other grown ups could do was tell them that once they get into the “real world” they are just a number, they should have it better than the previous generation. In 1979, the Stern publishing house published a book based on the interviews, Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo. The book chronicles Felscherinow's life from 1975 to 1978, between the ages of 12 and 15 years, and depicts several of Felscherinow's friends, along with other drug users, as well as scenes from typical locations of the Berlin drug scene at the time. While “Zoo Station” is unquestionably a powerful memoir, it can be problematic for some readers due to its graphic description of drug use, prostitution and overall Christiane F’s experiences. Some people may find the content disturbing. It also can be triggering for individuals who have struggled with addiction or had a traumatic experience relating to drug abuse. It was no surprise to see some of my classmates showing up for Latin class smelling like booze and meeting friends of friends that were so high all they could do was shout “moonface” at everyone. This book is a literal masterpiece. I watched the movie ‘Christiane F.’ Which heavily influenced me to read the book to understand her story on a deeper level. The movie genuinely did not do this book justice. Don’t get me wrong; the movie is FANTASTIC, but there were so many things that were stated in the book that were never brought up in the film. I can honestly say that the book was a million times better than the film. You see so much more depth between the mother and Christiane in the book rather than the film. In the film, when the mother finds out about her heroin addiction; she is never shown or really spoken of again. Yet in the book, the mother tries over and over to help her daughter.Once the film was released [in 1981], I didn’t know what was going on. Everywhere I went, there was my face on the poster. I felt so exposed. Later, I left for London to go to boarding school, then I moved to Paris. Forty years on, I still meet people who say: “Oh, you were that girl? I only wish I had read it sooner. I would definitely recommend it to everyone, although I have yet to find an English copy.
