There is a distinctive charcoal smokiness from the first sniff to the final sip, balanced with softer notes of butterscotch, marmalade, vanilla, and cinnamon. There are powerful aromas of cola and vanilla on first sniff, and these continue into tasting. We noticed some classic spicy notes such as cinnamon and nutmeg too, meaning it’s not completely removed from what you might expect from a classic spiced rum. Sly Dog’s spiced rum is sublimely smooth and sweet enough to enjoy simply over ice or with a mixer such as ginger beer or cola.

The truth is, there are a lot of decent options out there, and many rums are strikingly similar in price and taste. Like any good recipe, a pinch of salt can bring underlying flavours to life. Aged for up to 12 months in oak casks, the rum is spiced with a selection of fresh tropical fruit and exotic spices, including pineapple, orange, cacao and allspice. With bold flavour and an even bolder ABV, Cut Overproof Rum is a sweet, spicy, and seriously smoky liquor that’s definitely not for the faint of heart.It's easy to be seduced by an exciting story, the history of rum is woven in scandal and violence, from which brands have cleverly resold to blind us from the actual liquid that they sell. Rum can span the full spectrum of colours, from the light and mild white rums (which are perfect as a mojito base), through to aged golden rums that have developed a more complex taste. The team say it is "deliciously smooth and creamy. Notes of vanilla, caramel, butterscotch and citrus, with a long and spicy finish." The producer's bottle below the minimum level of alcoholic strength that would designate them as a ‘rum’. Here in Europe, this is 37.5% ABV (EU LAW)and many rums are 35% or lower, sometimes much lower. Malibu is only 21% and many retailers list it as ‘rum’ when it is really on a ‘spirit drink made with rum’.
