About this deal

The EX-15 bike itself is sized perfectly for smaller spaces, yet doesn't skimp on comforts like an extra-large cushioned seat and padded handlebars, and with its mechanical knob, allows you to vary resistance between 32 different levels. The Apex is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and works perfectly in sync with the app. The only downside is that at the time of writing the app is only compatible with Apple iOS and so its a no-go for android users. We have it on good authority that Apex are working on an Android app though so watch this space – (edit – Android has now launched so everyone can access the brilliance of the Apex App). You can sync your data with Strava and Apple Health which is also a nice touch. The Echelon Connect Sport is one of the most impressive budget spin bikes we have tested. It compares incredibly well on price to other models on this list and has access to class leading software and has some of the most advanced hardware at this price point. There are a couple of concessions you need to make compared to their pricier models (mainly there is no touch screen or SDP pedal compatibility) but if you are just on the lookout for a high quality bike that will last for home use then you needn’t look much further than the Connect Sport. It’s worth noting that the Apex bike will only work on iOS at the moment, making the Peloton or Echelon bikes better options for Android users.

Versatile use. The combination of heavy 20kg flywheel and magnetic resistance gives a lot of versatility to the IC300 Pro. You can use it for endurance, cardio, or HIIT. Use the wide LCD screen to read your stats and adjust your workout accordingly. The bike that has become synonymous with home spinning, Peloton offers a truly excellent all-round experience. The bike itself is an impressive bit of kit, with a solid build, a quiet ride and more resistance that I could ever need. You need the app to make it worthwhile, which means a monthly subscription, but the live and on-demand classes really do deliver the feel of a studio session and I’ve not yet tested another bike that matches the standard of Peloton’s classes. A built-in display shows you which virtual cog you are spinning, in addition to metrics like speed, heart rate and power, and a tablet holder allows you to mount your iPad easily if you have one.The bike sees a standard saddle and bars, meaning these can be customised depending on your personal preference and all the fit adjustments can be made either with the included levers or a hex wrench. Cranks can be adjusted with five holes built in ranging from 165 to 175mm.Weighing in at just under 50kg and with a maximum user weight of 130kg, the IC2 will be usable by most people. It is an ideal piece of kit for home and commercial gyms and it comes with a warranty that suits both situations. This bike measures up at 120cm (l) x 53cm (w) x 110cm (h) and sports a 15kg perimeter weighted flywheel. It has bluetooth and an ANT+ console which means it can be connected to other devices and of course heart rate monitors. Now you know what types exist, you need to consider what you want to get out of it. Do you want to ride in group classes online? Follow a training plan? Ride on Zwift? Race? Just want to ride? They mostly work your butt, thighs, and calves. Even when you’re standing, you’re only just moderately engaging your core and your upper body.

With an integrated dual-sided power meter, the SB20 is Bluetooth and ANT+ enabled so it will integrate seamlessly with Zwift and the like, or even allow the best bike computers or smartwatches to dictate your workout.

What should I look for in a spinning bike?

Life Fitness are one of the out and out best fitness equipment suppliers on the market and whilst their ICG range is pretty pricey for someone needing a spin bike for home use, the IC2 is an affordable entry level option to this level of bike. What Life Fitness deem as entry level is however many echelons above what the more budget models will offer and with the IC2 you are getting an absolute top end machine at a reasonable price point. The S15i is incredibly comfortable to use, has all the expected adjustability and is also easy to move around despite its 80kg or so of weight. You also get a couple of dumbbells with it which can be stored on the bike to incorporate some upper body resistance training in to your workouts. As one of the biggest names in cardio machines Technogym will no doubt have viewed the popularity of relative upstarts like Peloton with interest, and it has now responded with a spinning bike that offers the most impressive alternative to Peloton I’ve come across. Three-piece crank. This pedal system is sturdy and safe, plus it makes you feel like riding a real bike. Because it’s so solid, you can rest assured it increases your bike’s durability. Get clued up on resistance a little - that's the force you push against when you're cycling. Invest in a bike with varying levels of resistance which can be worked through with a manual screw or magnetic resistance. This will ensure your bike provides enough push for a tough workout.

Let’s take a look at the important stuff though – the Apex Smart Bike looks incredible and rides even better. It has a magnetic resistance, protected flywheel that affords a super smooth and quiet ride. It can take a maximum user weight of 140kg, measures up at 2ft x 4ft and weighs in at 45kg. You can use SPD or standard trainers thanks to the Shimano 50/50 pedals that are included as standard and the app gives you access to 100’s of live and on-demand fitness sessions specifically designed for the bike. It even has a charging point for your device and wireless phone charging. Magnetic resistance. This feature allows you to challenge your strength and endurance. The magnet near the flywheel is easy to adjust with a turn of the knob so that you can bump up or dial down the exercise intensity whenever you need to. Spin bikes are different than exercise bikes, but not necessarily better. They just have different purposes. You need to pair spinning sessions with other workouts, such as strength training to keep your muscle mass from deteriorating with age and to keep a good bone density. Not to mention that strength training sculpts your body amazingly. You also need some Yoga and Pilates for flexibility. Comfy saddle. The soft fabric on the seat is smooth and comfortable, sewn with quality stitching that lasts for longer. Underneath the upholstery, the foam padding is supportive and plush to minimize tailbone pain. The saddle height and fore/aft can be adjusted along with the handlebar height, very similar to a regular gym spin bike, and in theory you could attach your own pedals. If you’re a cyclist, there are plenty of factors that can foil your best intentions to get a ride in: rush hour traffic, unpredictable weather, and busy schedules are at the top of the list for many. While it's not quite the same thing, a cheap indoor exercise bike allows you to still sneak a ride in even after the sun has set. Even if you don’t usually ride a bike outside, the convenience of having a stationary exercise bike in your home can definitely elevate your fitness journey. JLL IC300 is best for people who want to improve their fitness levels, strength, and endurance, so they need gym-quality equipment at a reduced price. This bike’s design allows you to challenge yourself constantly according to your stats. That way, you can effectively plan your fitness progress. Put it this way – if your body expends 2500 calories on an average day and you usually consume 2500 calories then you are not going to gain or lose weight. If you still consume the 2500 calories but add a spin session to your usual day that means you are likely to be expending 2900 to 3100 calories – which is putting you in a calorie deficit of 400-600 calories – in this case, yes you will lose weight.
