About this deal

There is no need to repeat log the dispensing of loose tablets into child proof bottles. The student should focus on the other aspects of this task, to include a good variety of experiences. The Day One Skills list is a regulatory benchmark of essential clinical skills, developed and reviewed by the RCVS, based on the RCVS Day One Competences for Veterinary Nursing. The skills list is embedded in an There are Day One Skills for Veterinary Nursing in relation to the care of either horses (or other equidae) or small animals, which should include dogs, cats and exotic species, or a combination of the three.

The clinical coach is expected to liaise with staff members to ask them to act as a witness and what this will involve for the relevant skill(s). This may include discussion and/or provision of written information regarding the skill guidance and skill expectations in line with the practice case load. How should use of witnesses be logged in the NPL?

In logging their experiences, the student should note either in their case description or reflective comments the name of the witness(es) used. Dispose of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, safely and correctly according to current legislation Whilst this new version of the NPL contains a reduced number of tasks, the actual requirements for completing some tasks are quite considerable. In our experience students can find this confusing, so guidance from the clinical coach regarding task expectations, (based on the case load in your practice) may need to be clarified. Myth: witness statements must be written as for the NVQ portfolio – it isn’t sufficient for the clinical coach to speak to the witnesses. Once you gain access to your NPL you will be able to use the next available case to open the skill and sign it off. This could potentially be done in the same day providing you have sufficient, valid evidence in your written/electronic record to support this when audited by either CAW staff or the awarding body.

We have recently made a number of improvements to our Nursing Progress Log (NPL), an optional online assessment tool for student veterinary nurses. These updates are part of the revision of the Day-one Skills for veterinary nurses for which an open consultation was held in the summer of 2015. The new skills are designed to be in closer alignment with the revised Day-one Competences, and to make the required skills more relevant to clinical practice.Where this occurs, it would be really useful for the clinical coach to write a comment at the end of placement, noting the student’s progress. Records to include: patient records and reports, laboratory reports, admission and consent forms, client home care plans and instructions. It can be useful to plan for this from the start of training – making a list of tasks which are deemed ‘rare’ so that the team can be made aware that if such a case comes into the practice, the student can be called to get involved. Course providers do usually ask clinical coaches to wait until a student has learnt the necessary underpinning knowledge at college/university before opening a task, but where rare cases are concerned, the more cases a student can get involved in, the better. Simulation The patient’s temperament - you’ll need to be able to demonstrate to your clinical coach that over time you are competent at handling a range of temperaments. Also mention if any restraint aids such as towels or muzzles were used.
