It’s possible to configure the app notifications, so you can receive an alert when the kettle is finished boiling. Strangely, these only worked for me after having had them turned on for a few weeks. I’d get a notification on my iPhone and Apple Watch, but these would be sent even if my partner was boiling the kettle and I wasn’t even home. In the end, I turned the notifications off. There’s only a 2.2kW heating element here, so this is isn’t the fastest kettle. In our tests it took 1m 40s to boil 500ml of water. More impressive, the WeeKett Smart Wi-Fi Kettle retains heat well, so you won’t have to reboil it often. A 3kW-rated kettle, the Smeg KLF03 managed to boil 1-litre of water in just 2mins 5secs, making it one of the fastest models we’ve tested. If you want a high-quality kettle that looks great then this is the one to buy.

So, on firing up the app you first need to select the location and then the appliance, before you’re at the screen necessary to begin using the kettle. It’s a minor frustration – one that could so easily be improved.When connected to a smart home network, the iKettle can detect when you’ve arrived home via your mobile’s signal. If desired, you can have hot water already starting to boil as you walk in the door. If your kettle is still in working condition and you've simply gone off the design, you can donate it to charity, sell it to someone else or take it to a council reuse centre. For me, the main selling point of the iKettle 3.0 is its voice assistant support, which wasn’t available in the previous generation Smarter iKettle 2.0. Alongside Alexa and Google Assistant, the iKettle 3.0 can also work with IFTTT recipes, allowing you to be pretty creative. You can re-boil another jug full of water then throw that away to make sure no vinegar/lemon juice traces remain. Once done, your iKettle 3 rd Gen should be limescale-free and resume proper boiling.

Most other smart kettle products offer variable temperatures and remote control but don’t have the same connectivity as the iKettle. With the Smarter iKettle 3 rd Gen, you can easily integrate the device into an existing smart home network. The only way to figure this out is to consult the app, which isn’t convenient if you’re hoping to have Alexa or Google Assistant as your primary control method. You’ll also need to get used to re-filling the kettle between uses. Note that it’s good to get into a routine of adding just enough water for your next boil if you don’t want to waste energy, even if there’s a temptation to keep it topped up all the way. You're often paying for a premium style, materials and finish. You're also more likely to get extra features such as variable temperature settings.

Aesthetics aside, the Artisan also proved itself in our tests. It took just 2 mins 22 secs to boil 1l of water, which is on par with the rest of the 3,000W models tested. It also excels when it comes to keeping the noise down. During boiling, it only reached a maximum of 52.2dB, making it the quietest kettle on our list. What’s more, once the water’s boiled, there’s no worrying about burning your fingers on the sides. The outside of the Artisan reached an exterior temperature of just 33°C, owing to its dual-walled insulation. Some types of tea are best made at 80 or 90°C. For green teas and matcha, it was easy to set the temperature to the right place, and I would get a notification when it had finished. If you’d like to be able to start preparing your morning cuppa from the comfort of your bed, the Smarter iKettle 3.0 is a feature-rich appliance with only a few annoyances. The Smarter SMKET01-US Electric iKettle may not be as expensive as many high-end smart kettles on the market, but it’s still a bit pricey. If you’re someone who only rarely drinks hot beverages, or doesn’t have stable Wi-Fi, then the cost may not be worth it. If you’re a coffee or tea aficionado, however, it may be the best thing you’ll ever buy. There aren't that many app-connected kettles on the market, still, but if you're trying to choose between them, here are some questions to help you figure things out. Using filtered water, particularly in a hard water area, can help to reduce limescale build-up. Some kettles have integrated water filters, but using filtered water from a jug or filtering tap is just as good.
