About this deal

A funny and tender picture book. . . . [V]isual surprises and pleasures abound in this cathartic delight for children.” — Wall Street Journal An ambitious drama of rebellion, escape, and inclusivity rewarded.” - Publishers Weekly Starred Review . My thanks to Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley for the ARC of “The Barnabus Project”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book. Mile High Reading: https://readingwithmrteut.wordpress.com/2017/12/12/interview-with-the-fan-brothers-terry-fan-and-eric-fan/ To have an idea of the drawing style in this book, you can take a sneak peek here: http://www.thefanbrothers.com/#/the-barnabus-project/ !

In the Fan brothers’ hands, the result feels like a happy amalgam of Jules Verne, Maurice Sendak, the Moomins, and Monsters, Inc.” —STARRED REVIEW , Quill & Quire From the imagination of two acclaimed picture book creators, together for the first time, this dreamlike picture book is a magical ode to Victorian lunch wagons. Evoking the sounds, sights, smells and tastes of the city at night, Night Lunch reveals how empathy and kindness as well as dignity and gratitude can be found — and savored — in the most unexpected places.” Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments Written by Beth Ferry. Illustrated by Terry and Eric Fan. HarperCollins. Publication date: September 3rd, 2019. Meticulous draftsmanship by the Fan Brothers ( The Night Gardener) gives the spreads genuine majesty… the artists imagine not a general, one-size-fits-all afterlife, but one that Finn and his grandfather share—and one that readers will feel privileged to share with them." - Publishers Weekly Starred Review .Therefore Pip makes the decision to escape his jar and take his friends with him so that they are not recycled either.

The Fan brothers ( The Night Gardener) switch easily between fantasy elements (furry aliens with glowing eyes lurk in Chris’s bedroom) and documentary images. The idea that a famous astronaut was once afraid of the dark may win some recalcitrant bed-goers’ hearts, and readers with dreams of space travel will jump at this." - Publishers Weekly Starred Review. He is brave and kind and is the perfect character to show children it's ok to be different and to follow your dreams and not to be afraid. The Fan brothers' second picture book, Ocean Meets Sky, centers on the magical spot between sky and sea.

Marmalade Books: https://readmarmalade.com/blogs/news/my-interview-with-children-s-author-and-illustrator-team-terry-and-eric-fan-the-fan-brothers This suspenseful, poignant and magical story about following your dreams and finding where you truly belong will draw readers into a surreal, lushly detailed world in which perfection really means being true to yourself and your friends. (From Tundra Books) During their escape the Failed Projects find another project who has been rejected. This project is very large and is water based. Barnabus convinces the other projects that they should help this creature escape. However, they are interrupted by the Green Rubber Suits who are trying to capture all the Failed Projects. The artwork is beyond words. I fell in love with each character, their uniqueness. The storyline, strong. The ending a shade darker. This book is a happily ever after based more in reality than an over the rainbow. The new project they found saves all the other Failed Projects because the water from the tank carries all the other characters up to Perfect Pet shop. Whilst in the shop Barnabus meets his perfect counterpart, Barnaby. Barnabus decides that although he isn't perfect his freedom is much better. When he and his imperfect friends decide to make a break for freedom, you’ll root for them every step of the way.”— Evanston Public Library Devin Fan is an artist, poet and youth worker. The Barnabus Project is his first children's book and marks the first time all three brothers have written and illustrated a picture book together.

He finds a strength he never knew he had. He refuses to leave no one behind, What Barnabus and the others find is beautiful yet overwhelming, and a freedom they all believed did not exist.....together. Barnabus and his friends are held behind glass, confined to their own space. He dreams of what it would be like to be free, to see the outside world. No one believes it possible, but Barnabus. This endearing picture book, with graphite and digital illustrations, will rouse justice-minded children to action with its reminders of the important things in life.” - School Library Journal, Starred Review.Eric Fan and his brother Terry Fan debuted with the widely acclaimed picture book The Night Gardener. The story has a great message about working together to achieve the impossible, and loving yourself for who you truly are. The illustrations are really beautiful as well. And honestly, how can you really going wrong when the main character is a mouse/elephant hybrid who loves peanuts and cheese?! In a Nutshell: I liked the idea behind this book. I didn’t like the book. I found the content too dark for kids and the plot wasn’t structured well.
