Sayoko becomes pregnant with Sala shortly after she turns thirty and shortly before Sala is born, Takatsuki reveals that he knows Sayoko liked Junpei more than she liked him when they were in school; nonetheless, he admits that she is the "greatest woman in the world. Five years later, Haruki Murakami, already a major figure in world literature, would attempt to come to grips with a year of surreal violence. Pastrocchio inenarrabile che tenta goffamente di legare il tema del peccato con una sottile atmosfera conturbante; ma il peggio arriva con la stucchevole risoluzione finale che si va a barcamenare tra catarsi shintoiste e prese di coscienza con tanto di nerchia gigante a fare da spettatrice (idea vagamente simpatica, ma, davvero, non si può leggere senza strabuzzare gli occhi).

It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance.

To tell the truth I feel a little bit unsettled about this book, because it is definitely new, strange and unusual for me. The man who Yoshiya follows gets off at a station in the Chiba Prefecture and hails down a cab; Yoshiya is able to get a cab to follow the man. We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed.

Si datorita acestui fapt, poate arata in orice fel, in functie de ce e in sufletul celui care il priveste. Each of the stories touches on the 1995 earthquake in Kobe, although only gently- none of the stories are based there and none of them feature the earthquake as a main part of the tale. As always with Murakami there are themes of love and loss, solitude and friendship and some of the stories include surreal moments which seem entirely believable when you are reading them. Indeed, it felt as if I was wading through the rubble of their minds, and witnessing the ruptures and shaking of their emotional lives. Both men are in love with the woman in the group, and when ends up with her, the other stays a constant part of both their lives.

He asks Shimao about a "bear story" he heard them mention earlier; she tells him the story: when Shimao was in high school, she and her boyfriend had sex in the woods and they perpetually rang a bell during intercourse to keep bears away. This short collection of six stories - few of them taking more than 15 minutes to read - take their origin from the devastating earthquake that hit Kobe in Japan not long ago. There is no travel, because the infrastructure for such things is in tatters, and music is replaced by the perpetual buzz of television news. The single 88 minute episode covered four of the six stories from the book: UFO in Kushiro, Thailand, Super-Frog Saves Tokyo and Honey Pie. ATQ is wonderfully translated by Jay Rubin, a master at bringing out Murakami’s peculiar version of loneliness and alienation. Despite my addiction to Murakami, this is actually a collection of unrelated short stories linked - somewhat tenuously sometimes- to the Kobe earthquake.

I got up to run downstairs—completely forgetting that the top of the door frame came to the bridge of my nose. In an essay for Granta, he reflects on the quake and the gas attack: “To me, the two events weren’t separate and discrete; unravelling one might help unravel the other. All of the stories are set in February 1995, the month between the Kobe earthquake and the Tokyo gas attacks. Katagiri wakes up in the hospital the next morning; he asks the nurse if he has been shot and if there has been an earthquake and she says neither has happened. The stories in after the quake repeat motifs, themes, and elements common in much of Murakami's earlier short stories and novels, but also present some notable stylistic changes.

I haven't even read his three most popular works ( Norwegian Wood, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle or Kafka on the Shore). Murakami’s most famous novels deploy an enormous range of American and global pop culture references. Nimit helps her find a pool away from the hotel and chauffeurs her there every day for five days; he also provides her with lunch. I quite liked “Thailand” because it had some color (music and magical spices) and no such big passivity and “Honey Pie” with a fine silent love story, emotional and cute kid and the view to the world through the fairytales. And then it struck him what lay buried far down under the earth on which his feet were so firmly planted: the ominous rumbling of the deepest darkness, secret rivers that transported desire, slimy creatures writhing, the lair of earthquakes ready to transform whole cities into mounds of rubble.
