About this deal

I am not going to mince my words here, as with the Derwent Drawing range, I absolutely love this particular range of pencils. Derwent as a company are producing some of the most versatile products on the market at the minute, the Drawing and Graphitint ranges may not have a large number of colours in their sets, but the colours they do have will be difficult to find in other sets, making them a unique brand of pencils. After talking to a Derwent representative about this very issue, they confirmed what I and many others have already said, to increase the sets to 48, 72 or 120, would be to make them the same as any other set of watersoluable pencils out there, and that is not what Derwent, or their customers want. Derwent Precision pencils are ideal for precise lines and detailed drawings. The fine lead allows you to create thin, sharp lines, making it perfect for technical or fine art applications. Use light pressure for lighter lines and heavier pressure for bolder lines. For shading you can use the side of the pencil but they are exceptionally good to use for cross hatching techniques. Derwent Graphic pencils can be sharpened to a fine point, making them excellent for adding small details and precise lines to your artwork.

Derwent Graphitint is a collection of 12 subtle water-soluble hues that combine hints of colour with the beauty of graphite. This range of colours is perfect for bringing out the drama of graphite while mixing it with soft shades. You can now experience these unique properties in paint pan form with the Derwent Graphitint Travel Paint Pan Set! All the colours in this set rank at 6 (Good) or above on the Blue Wool lightfastness scale, with the exception of Russet (4) and Port (5). The majority of the colours rank at a 7 (very good) or 8 (excellent). They will remain as rich as the day they were painted for up to 100+ years under museum conditions. Use with other Derwent Accessories Scrape your graphitint pencil from the tip of the pencil into wet areas of the paper to create interesting textures, for stone walls, sand, pebbles and foliage. You can even dip your pencil into water then sketch onto wet paper for really interesting results. You can also alter the pressure you use for creative mark-making. The Derwent Line and Wash Paint Pan Set is full of some of the brand’s best selling products. With a variety of sketching and drawing materials, it includes everything you’ll need to enjoy painting on the go. Choose from Inktense, Graphitint and Pastel Shades – plus Line Maker Pens – to create beautiful Line and Wash paintings. To begin with, the specifics of the medium should be covered, closely followed by the performance. Unfortunately, and I use the term unfortunately due to the delectable colour palette, there are only twenty four colours in the Derwent Graphitint range. However, this is another case of be careful what you wish for, if this range, as is the same issue with the Derwent DrawingRange, was increased, then you would start to lose the absolute uniqueness of the colour range, turning both sets into ordinary run of the mill pencil sets.Derwent offers a range of 24 colours in their Tinted Charcoal line, providing artists with options to explore and experiment with a variety of hues. These colours can be used individually or mixed to create custom shades, adding depth and dimension to drawings. Use the white pencil for highlights and to lighten colours. Layer colours to create unique colour stories.

As with the Derwent Inktense Travel Paint Pan Sets, this collection contains more than enough to begin with. You might find it useful to carry a few more tools and accessories with you if you are working on medium sized pieces. If you need something more substantial than the included water brush, but don’t want to lug around your best brushes, then one of our Derwent Push Button Waterbrushes could be the answer. These waterbrushes have a much larger water barrel and a push button mechanism to control paint flow. They are available in four sizes and are great for creating all kinds of strokes and marks. You will probably still need to carry a bottle of water if you are working on large pieces.Use Graphitint pencils on rough and smooth surfaces. The rough surface will give you a grainier result, which you smooth out with water, whilst the smooth paper will be great for illustrations and small details. Remember the more the pigment is layed down, the darker the colours will be. Start with a light hand to create basic shapes and outlines. These pencils come in various grades, so experiment with different ones to find the level of hardness or softness that suits your sketching needs. Vary your pressure and you can achieve varying results of mark making. Once you have your sketch in place, it's time to start activating the water-soluble properties of the pencils. Dip your paintbrush into clean water and then gently brush it over the pencil lines. The water will blend the pigments, creating a beautiful watercolour effect. You can control the intensity of the colour by adjusting the amount of water you apply and by layering the different grades of pencils.
