About this deal

The Mayor's Women's Night Safety Charter also sets out guidance for venues, operators, charities, councils and businesses to improve safety at night for women - including better training of staff, encouraging the reporting of harassment and ensuring public spaces are safe. Over 600 organisations are signed up to the Charter with more urged to get involved: Women' Night Safety Charter Sexual harassment includes a range of sexually motivated offences and behaviours. It can include rubbing, groping, masturbation, leering, sexual comments, indecent acts, or someone taking photos or film of you without your consent. TfL encourages everyone to report anything of a sexual nature that makes them feel uncomfortable. There is no need to prove that it was a criminal offence or intentional to report it, the police will investigate. Despite this, there is evidence that women were also present in the creation and operation of the railways. Helena Wojtczak, renowned British historian and author of Railway Women, wrote that in the 1851 census, three women were listed as ‘railway labourers’. Indeed, there were women hired by rail companies to perform duties that they could only do, but these were generally prohibited and defined by feminine propriety. For example, only women could work as ladies’ room attendants, or attend to female passengers. Only women could clean, launder or sew. Often, these roles were inextricably linked to a woman’s place in the home; only a railwaymen’s wife could obtain a position in the industry and thus, the role of wife became intertwined with a railwayman’s job.

So, why is there still a gender imbalance in rail – why aren’t there more women seeking employment in rail? Wood stair railings are one of the most popular types of railings. They are typically associated with a regal, traditional look, as in many libraries and historic homes. Because of this, wood stair railings are often used in government buildings and homes that want a higher-end design. When diving, the Peregrine falcon is the fastest animal on the planet. But with their great grip, you’ll be pleased to hear its Saucony namesake will keep you firmly on your feet. The latest iteration is a great trail shoe: light without being minimalist and comfortable while still being responsive. Albeit not at falcon-diving pace. By the 1970s, women in rail were, again, confined to cleaning, catering or clerical work. Even then, women were hindered from career progression and promotions. In catering and cleaning, women were prohibited from supervising or managing men, and female office workers were stalled by their male colleagues, unions and managers. The employment of married women was openly condemned, and women were not allowed to work at night. This modern transitional kitchen and dining room features a floating frosted glass baluster staircase with chrome handrailing. Spiral RailingThere is currently a skills shortage across the rail industry, but we need to act fast if we are going to meet this increased demand. We need more skilled workers of all kinds: engineers, surveyors, construction workers, signallers, and drivers. Crossrail will open this year and HS2 and other projects are ramping up recruitment. We are all fighting for the same people, so collectively we need to promote rail and attract a diverse range of people at an earlier age. Finally, we need to teach girls the value of transport and engineering qualifications; how those skills are appreciated by employers across the economy. Overall TfL figures indicate that use of London's public transport network is at around 70 per cent of pre-pandemic levels and that millions of Londoners are returning to the transport network, showing they have confidence that it is safe, clean and reliable.Therearenow regularly more than 55per centof journeyson the Tubeon weekdayscompared to before the pandemic, but that has reached as high as 80per centat weekends, while ridership on buses is regularly at 75per centof pre-pandemic levels and on TfL rail services like London Overground it is around 60per cent, with weekends reaching even higher. When referring to types of stair railings, many people are referring to the style of the handrailing. Often, style choices are influenced by the types of stairs you have – such as traditional or spiral – and the material used for the banister. But for many women, particularly after having children, a rigid, inconsiderately-planned shift pattern just doesn’t work.

By raisingawareness of these issues, TfL hopesto encourage Londoners to look out for and support each other, and to engage bystanders to speak up so that perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions. This could involve people learning to recognise the signs of sexual harassment, providing support to the person who is being harassedorreporting the incident. In other words, a stair railing that curves into the wall rather than ends at a 90-degree angle would be a more contemporary design.Chrisma spoke on this explaining: “To meet the growing demand for an increasing rail workforce, we need everyone to promote rail to the younger generation through the various STEM programmes and career workshops in schools. Leon Lloyd is a former England international rugby player, who has played at the highest level and against elite players such as Jonah Lomu, (and survived!). He won 11 trophies whilst playing with the English and European Champions, Leicester Tigers. Since retiring from playing the sport, he has gained a first-class honours degree in Leadership and Management, followed by an MBA receiving a Distinction. He has gone on to work with other elite organisations that include the SAS and the Premier League. Adeline Ginn MBE, who founded the charity in 2012, was keynote speaker at the conference. She shared WR’s remarkable journey and achievements to date, highlighting the passion and dedication of the WR team of volunteers who, for the last 10 years, has been working relentlessly to drive long lasting changes within the UK railway industry.

Finally, the guard railing height has a minimum of 36 inches. This measurement is to ensure that people on the landing of the stairs don’t fall and injure themselves. If the landing on your stairs is more than 30 inches off the ground, a guardrail must be installed. Railing Repair and Replacement Costs In 2012, the Women in Rail initiative was established to bridge the skills gap in rail, and to improve the gender imbalance that exists in the industry. By advertising the railways as an attractive career choice to women, the railway is working towards facilitating industry access to a wider pool of talent, which further benefits the future of the rail industry. has been declared as the Year of Engineering, and both men and women are playing a vital role in encouraging young people to consider a career in rail. This, coupled with the 100 th anniversary of women achieving the vote, and indeed, International Women’s Day, the beginning of 2018 has been dominated by the industry’s efforts to encourage women into rail. The history of women in rail The first option you have is a wrought iron railing. These are a popular option as wrought iron is often used for ornate designs. You can depend on wrought iron to stay well-kept throughout the years since wrought iron is often coated to keep out dirt and moisture.Pretty much any design that can be used on a standard staircase can be used on a spiral staircase, although the labor for installation may command a higher cost. And looking ahead, we will open Crossrail and start HS2, before beginning a new round of investment projects that will take us up to 2025 and beyond. The campaign aims to challenge thenormalisation and dismissal of this behaviour as 'something that happens' to women and girls on public transport and in other public spaces, making it clear that it is never acceptable and that the strongest possible action will always be taken. The stair banister rail should also project no more than 4 ½ inches from the wall it is mounted on. The minimum distance a rail should have for clearance between the rail and wall is 1 ½ inches to provide adequate room for holding the handrails. Research from Women in Rail showed that 16% of people who work in the rail industry are female but only 2% of females in the railway industry are engineers. Engineering UK recently reported that 14.5% of those working in engineering are female. The stark difference between the two stats (14.5% versus 2%) shows that we as an industry have much more work to do to attract female engineers into rail.

The Trailfly is an impressively versatile shoe with enough cushioning for long runs but with a zero-drop, fast-feeling appeal. With an outsole made from graphene – Inov-8’s tougher-than-tough material – it’s built to last even some serious ultra mileage on the most challenging terrain. During the First World War, almost one third of male railway workers joined the armed forces, leaving the country’s railways in crisis. While opposition to women in rail was fierce, and they were restricted in carrying out certain work on the railways, there was a stampede for jobs. The proportion of women working in rail increased from 2% to 66% in four years. By the end of the war in 1918, almost 66,000 women were employed in the rail industry. Half of these women were uniformed, performing manual labour in roles previously considered inappropriate for women. Don’t let the GTX fool you into thinking this is some kind of extreme model for only the severest conditions and most technical terrain. It’s actually a true road/trail hybrid, with a React foam midsole that feels great on the pavement. And, though the GTX distinction suggests ankle-high waterproofness, the material only reaches to the top of the laces. The gaiter collar is instead a stretchy fabric, preferable for shielding against trail debris and light drizzle. Though not suited for deeper stream crossing, this construction does breathe easier. After splashing through shallow streams and rain-filled potholes, there’s a delightful absence of the soggy wet squish you sometimes get after fully sealing your feet inside GoreTex. If the first version of the Catamount was Brook’s tentative step towards creating a trail supershoe – with a responsive, high-energy return midsole – then the second iteration leaps wholeheartedly into that market. Winders are steps that are narrower on one side than on the other, which are commonly used in a spiral design. A set of winders forms the circular steps for a circular staircase. That’s why I am so pleased to support Women in Rail - for showing the rail industry what it misses when it misses out on women, and for inspiring women by showing them what a career in rail can offer. Furthermore, the minimum distance between two railings should be 27 inches. This provides adequate room for someone to climb the stairs while carrying items without hindrance. If your staircase only has one outside rail and a wall on the other side, the minimum distance should be no less than 31 ½ inches. When you decide to replace your stair railing, you must know how much of an investment this is. Typically, the installation cost is paid per hour, and installation takes about a day of work.
