About this deal

The Nokia G21’s performance is uninspiring stuff, but nothing out of line with our expectations of a handset at this end of the market. The camera is the main reason to buy the Nokia G21 over the Nokia G11. The phone comes with a 50-megapixel primary sensor, which seems to be this week’s hot resolution, seen in flagship phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S22. To start this list, we have the ELANGEL Case for Nokia G21. The case is made of high grade leather and materials for durable use and an elegant look. The inner case made of soft TPU holds the phone firmly without scratching it. The case gives all-around wrapping of mobile phones. Effectively prevents the mobile phone from being scratched by everyday usage.

This is classic Nokia, which has for years been the primary proponent of “naked Android” initiatives such as Android Go and Android One. A clean and clear interface is always welcome, although these days we find ourselves pretty happy using most manufacturers’ third-party skins. Ark: Survival Evolved had a slideshow-like quality with the graphics maxed-out. To get it to a nicely smooth playable speed we had to set the graphics to “low” and bring down the resolution, making it look more like a PS2 game. The Nokia G21 runs Android 11, now the older version of the operating system. The newer Android 12 makes some neat surface-level changes – such as more color in the menu system – that would potentially enhance a phone such as this one. However, what you shouldn’t expect is what the high-res sensor appears to promise: detail. The Nokia G21’s images don’t hold up as expected when zoomed-in. They’re a tad soft down at pixel level, and dense textures such as the leaves of distant trees just don’t look all that realistic up-close. Gaming is a slightly better story, with the G21 achieving an average onscreen frame rate of 25fps in the GFXBench Manhattan 3 onscreen test. Both the Moto G31 and Redmi Note 11 scored lower in the same benchmark, although it’s worth noting that the latter is rendered at a higher 1080p resolution. When it comes to processing speeds, what you’re getting here is a low-cost phone that can just about keep up with Android 11’s various actions and applications, but don’t expect day-to-day performance to be stress-free. This doesn’t ruin the overall experience of using a Nokia G21, but phones costing not much more have managed to make the real-world performance differences between cheap Android devices and more expensive models start to disappear.

Nokia does this by keeping costs as low as possible in other areas. The most obvious example is that while the Nokia G21’s 6.5in display supports a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz, it’s still only a simple IPS panel with a 720p resolution – and, as you’ll see later in this review, it’s pretty dire quality-wise. In the Geekbench 5 single- and multicore tests, the Nokia G21 scored 311 and 1,190, which is about on a par with the Moto G31, but trails slightly behind the Nokia 5.4. Predictably, not a single one of these phones is a match for the pricier Xiaomi Redmi Note 11.

With just a few positives and more than a few negatives, the Nokia G21 is a bit of a disappointment

Note, too, that the panel’s native color temperature is cool, leaning towards blueish whites. However, you can tweak this in the Settings menu. We think it looks better with the slider nudged over to “warm”.

Images aren’t mind-blowing, but for the price, you’re getting pictures that have a good amount of detail, well-judged auto exposure and accurate colour representation. Some of the low-light shots are a bit on the grainy side, but there’s still a lot to like here. Video quality is awful, however. You can only shoot at resolutions up to 1080p, there’s no software stabilization at all, and the actual image looks more 360p resolution than 1080p. Next up is the FTRONGRT Leather case for Nokia G21. This wallet case cover is made of waterproof soft and durable PU leather and soft TPU inner shell, excellent in scratch resistance, ventilation, soft and comfortable gripping feeling. The inner case is flexible for easily putting your Nokia G21 in the case without worrying about scratching your devices. The flip case with a stand function brings you more convenience to watch videos or play games anywhere, anytime. We don’t recommend using the Nokia G2’s 2x zoom mode. This phone doesn’t have a zoom lens, and the poor close-up quality of standard pics is only emphasized when you digitally zoom into them. Sadly, battery life is another weak point. The Nokia G21 isn’t anything special, with a score of just 17hrs 33mins in our standardised battery test. That might be a three-hour improvement on last year’s Nokia 5.4, but it’s nowhere close to the Moto G31’s result of almost 24 hours.

We’re still miles off the quality of a great night-time shooter, but “mediocre” is better than “awful”. Along the bottom edge of the Nokia G21 you’ll find a single speaker. It isn’t particularly loud; in fact, it sounds rather thin, and obviously delivers a poorer sound field than a stereo pair. Currently, you’re seeing budget devices include some pretty impressive speakers; the unit here is mediocre. Display The Nokia G21’s primary camera is a 50MP (f/1.8) affair, and this is aided by a pair of 2MP depth and macro sensors, which are mostly redundant. You might not get much use out of these secondary lenses, but the good news is that the main camera is surprisingly competent for a phone as cheap as this. Most people are unlikely to see that kind of longevity, but real-world stamina remains excellent. Charging every other day is a realistic proposition with a Nokia G21, even if you use it for frequent messaging and photo-taking.

A slow phone with a big battery

On the flip side, consumer-friendly additions include a 3.5mm headphone port on the top edge, with space for two nano-SIMs as well as a microSD card. The Nokia G21 charges via USB-C at the bottom, delivering a maximum 18W of power to the phone’s large 5,050mAh battery. Night-time images are fairly poor; but we actually expected them to be worse given the Nokia G21’s small sensor. There’s a dedicated Night mode, which takes somewhere between one and two seconds to capture an image, with significant improvements to detail – both in the darkest areas, and to the sharpness of detail in the brighter parts.
