The role of the Rectifier is just to stretch the muscles and make them develop. Then the temporary elongation of the face it is necessary to allow the enlargement of the face itself. Except for the occasional slight incisor crowding and rotation, observation of the teeth indicated that they were well-aligned with very-good-to excellent occlusion, in general. Thorough analysis of dental data from the Amarna burials has shown that Egyptian and most ancient teeth have extensive tooth wear on occlusal (chewing) surfaces of even the youngest individuals. Malocclusion is rare in Amarna but very common in America; tooth wear is extensive in Amarna yet rare in America. 16 So many factors were different when humans lived as hunter-gatherers but one of the most influential is the modern availability of soft food for babies and infants. Escalating attempts to straighten teeth, to treat one of the epidemic’s most prominent symptoms, are one obvious indicator of the scale of the epidemic. Having braces as a child has become so common in the Western world that it can seem a rite of passage. Today an estimated 50 to 70 percent of children in the United States will wear braces sometime between the ages of 6 and 18. 14 It is not clear how much the increase in use of braces in recent years is a response to a great explosion of malocclusion or a consequence of less expensive tooth-straightening appliances, better marketing by dentists, and changes in attitudes on appearance in a photo-addicted society (think “selfies.”). Ironically, the effects of braces may not always be as beneficial as people have been led to think. As we’ll see, braces may actually reduce the size of the airway, 15 leading eventually to problems in breathing like sleep apnea. The temporal region is composed of the frontal, sphenoid and temporal bones. It is covered mainly by the temporalis muscle and overlying skin.

As early as 1894, a Canadian dentist named Weston Price became interested in the relationship between nutrition, dental health, and overall health. Over time, this interest became something of an obsession. In the 1930’s, he went on to investigate his theories about diet and dental health by studying groups of people around the world who were still eating the traditional diets of their area. This is a weird one. I guess I should thank the acquisitions staff at Fort Vancouver Regional Library for purchasing this title and for displaying it on the New Books shelf for me to discover by serendipity. Robert Salpolsky wrote a Foreword, Jared Diamond blurbed it, and it's co-authored by the lauded Paul ( Population Bomb) Ehrlich, but the tone is strangely demotic and chatty, heavily footnoted but veering into opinionated tangents presumably outside the expertise of an orthodontist (and I have to wonder how much the 86-year old Ehrlich was really involved). Not only does poor oral rest posture cause changes in facial growth, they also impact long- term health because the jaws, palate and airways develop abnormally and can lead to: It will be as if your face was going every day in the gym. Yet instead of lifting weights and lying down on the benches (wet from other people sweat), it will spend its time developing facial muscles. After several weeks of dinner club discussion, the importance of Sandra’s work became evident to Paul, as did how it fit into his long-term interest in human evolution and the environment. It even took Sandra a while to see why he was so excited about the connections among chewing, stuffy noses, and smiles. But he had spent his life connecting things such as population, food, toxins, resources, water, weather, war, and politics into a unified picture of the human future. When we finally took our idea for Jaws to an editor, he said, “Let me get this straight: no orthodontist is practicing this, you are the only ones who know about this, and you think that everyone needs to beware of a ‘huge public health issue’ right under their own noses?” Yes! The clincher for him, and many others, was Image 4, showing what a hunter-gatherer’s jaws look like, with roomy perfect arches of well-aligned teeth, with no impacted wisdom teeth—a movie star’s dream jaw, 15,000 years before movies! Oral posture (lips together, tongue on palate, teeth together) is largely responsible for the normal growth and development of the face and jaws. The tongue is a powerful muscle and should rest against the upper palate (roof of mouth) and cause the upper jaw to broaden and grow forward in the healthy and esthetically appealing manner. When this does not happen, because of tongue tie and/or open mouth posture, the midface does not grow properly and the lower jaw is typically trapped behind a deficient upper jaw and midface.

The mental region is located inferior to the mouth. It features the chin, a central structure that overlies mental protuberance of the mandible. I think the best evidence comes from human ancestors. Richard Klein, Stanford paleontologist and the world’s expert on the human fossil record, said to me, “I’ve never seen a hunter-gatherer skull with crooked teeth.”

How bones and teeth shape the face

Oblique facial clefts:When the maxillary prominence fails to merge with the lateral nasal prominence the nasolacrimal duct is exposed. A bold and provocative title. The subject matter deserves that, and much, much more. What is the subject? I found myself wondering time and again. You’re connecting reduced jaw size with stress and associated health risks. How is it possible for all of those things, which seem so disparate, to be linked?
