About this deal

tado° increases the efficiency of your heating system, as well as improving your comfort at home with the help of its smart Skills: For our test we went with a complete Tado installation consisting of a central Smart Thermostat aided by four Smart Radiator Thermostats. This would ensure that the upstairs rooms (which tend to be a lot colder than the rest of the flat) could be heated in line with the rest of the building. tado° is your Climate Assistant that ensures a comfortable & healthy climate, whilst considerably reducing your energy consumption. This bundle includes a tado° Starter Kit (V3+) with an Internet Bridge and 8 tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats. If you want to control rooms individually, you add Smart Radiator Thermostats into the mix. In a similar vein to the Honeywell Evohome system, Tado’s Smart Radiator Thermostats replace your old dumb TRVs, giving you dedicated control over each room’s temperature.

View in-app reports about your heating activity, temperature and humidity profiles and the energy being saved by TadoWe were particularly impressed with the HomeKit integration, which is Apple’s smart home ecosystem. We set up an Elgato Eve Button to act as both a heating and lighting switch, so that we could instantly turn on both the (Tado-controlled) radiator and the ( Philips Hue-enabled) light when we entered into a room. The choice is handy, as you can stop someone from dialling up the heating for too long and wasting energy. Impressively, the settings are per room, so you can have different choices for different places in your home.

Overall from a functional perspective the Tado system is strong. Room-by-room control is effective, and integration with external ecosystems means that the system should be able to work harmoniously with the rest of your gadgets. The only big missing feature is motion-detection, but depending on how you hope to use the system this might not be a huge concern to you. Performance There’s no way to have the system learn your preferences automatically as with the Nest thermostat. The Smart Radiator Thermostats run on 2 x AA batteries, which should last up to two years depending on use. A thermostatic radiator valve allows you to set a radiator at a different temperature, so you can heat your home only where required. This can help reduce your home's energy consumption. Turn your heating up or down in the tado° app. The Internet Bridge, which is connected to the internet via the router, transmits this information wirelessly to your Add-on - tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat V3+ Basic for Multi-Room Control. If you already own a tado° Starter Kit you can supplement it with additional Smart Thermostats to control your entire heating system and save even more. tado fits seamlessly into the connected home. You can control it with Apple HomeKit, and it works with Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa devices for effortless voice control. Weather Adaptation - saves you money on warmer days and ensures your comfort is maintained on colder days

The universal radiator thermostat fits most radiators with thermostatic radiator valves (various adapters are included) and it can be mounted vertically or horizontally depending on the type of radiator. The pieces are all in place for the Tado smart heating system to provide an excellent, efficient heating system and for the most part it succeeds. However, there are a couple of problems that we experienced which are worth bearing in mind if you’re thinking of investing in the system. We liked Use multi-room control to schedule and control 8 rooms or areas with the tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats tado’s Smart Radiator Thermostat gives you smart heating control. It’s used in place of conventional radiator thermostats, letting you control your heating system remotely with the tado app (available on iOS and Android). When the installer arrived it was a fairly simple process to unequip our last thermostat, and get Tado’s system hooked up. The only time-consuming part of the process was getting the individual radiator thermostats hooked up to the system (since this required us, the user, assigning them each to a room on the app), but the whole installation was over in a couple of hours without too much hassle. To connect the thermostat to the internet you need the internet bridge, which also makes the system compatible with Apple HomeKit. The internet bridge is USB powered and plugs into your router via Ethernet. It would be easier if the Smart Thermostat had Wi-Fi built-in, so that this extra component wasn’t needed. Tap each room and you can change the temperature by using the sliding scale. Temperatures are adjusted in 1/10th of a degree (18.1C, 18.2C, and so on), which seems very flexible but makes it fiddly to hit the limit you want. Realistically, 1/2-degree increments would have made more sense. SOLUTION: So let's create a time schedule to overwrite undesirable behaviour on the actuator side. If we would manually set the temperature to be way higher that actually needed for say the first 30 minutes depending on the size of the room, and then gradually drop the temperature evey other 30 minutes (a degree at the time) we would end up with the correct temperature in the room and on the sensor. With the hardware installed we then needed to set up our heating schedules, and this is where things got a lot more complicated.

Collecting the old product which is officially counted as WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment). These products are separated into the correct waste flow at our local depots and send directly to government approved WEEE recycling plants. As a White Goods manufacturer, we take our WEEE obligations very seriously and actively encourage our customers to use the most environmentally friendly recycling scheme available in the UK However, Tado has since rectified this and made it possible to copy schedules to make setting up the smart thermostat far easier. Design The Smart Radiator Thermostats aren’t that loud, although it takes some getting used to when installed in a bedroom, as the mechanical noise of the valve moving can wake you until you get used to the sound. The smart TRVs are conceptually at great idea, but they have a glaring flaw that has a clear and easy(?) solution. This left just two valve-equipped radiators in our home without the Tado radiator valves. We chose to not install these on the radiators in our kitchen and living room since they’re the most likely to be the same temperature as the hallway where the central Thermostat is.
