Your Matched Play Roster or Kill Team Dataslate, which are the larger rosters for Matched Play and Spec Ops, respectively. These are the bigger groups that your kill team will be drawn from, and where you can stash extra options and loadouts to swap into your fire teams. This is similar to the Kill Team 2018 roster, where you build a Kill Team from your roster before the game starts. If you’re playing a narrative Spec Ops campaign (more on that below), equipment works a little differently. Rather than freely choosing any item that takes your fancy, your squad will earn rare pieces of equipment throughout their campaign, which look to be decidedly deadly. Your Kill Team will also nowbe subdividedinto one or more Fire Teams, depending on your faction – a mechanic intended to add structure, and differentiate between elite Kill Teams like Space Marines (who can only take one small Fire Team) and squishier factions like Imperial Guard, who (as you can see in the graphic above) can field two, with more operators in each.

The rules for those operatives are largely the same as for the Forge World Kill Team stats-wise, but a few new operative types and abilities have been added: Rangers can now be Marksmen (regular Rangers), Diktats (with an ability to give another operative an extra Action Point), Surveyors (with an Omnispex action that makes another friendly operativ Kill team operatives are willing to risk life and limb on shadowy missions against elite foes, but even they fear the idea of venturing into a space hulk. Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for you, that’s exactly what they’ll be doing in the Kill Team Annual 2023 – Season of the Gallowdark . They don’t have the stat line** to match some of their more monstrous brethren, and their Mindless trait means they find it harder to seize mission objectives, but a fire team does contain eight of these shambling creatures. That makes them useful as a relatively disposable screen for your more powerful Death Guard operatives. Should an operative lose all their wounds during a mission, they’ll have to make a Casualty Test at the match’s end to determine what, if any, persistent damage they sustain. Push them too far without letting them rest between missions, and that bullet wound to their skull might be a little more permanent than you had anticipated.
