Church Hymnal, The [Irish] – Association for Promoting Christian Knowledge/Oxford University Press 1960 Touch the Earth Lightly – Hope Publishing Company (distributed in Europe by Stainer & Bell Ltd) 2008 Later Hymns & Ballads & Fifty Poems (Fred Pratt Green) – Hope Publishing Company and Stainer & Bell Ltd 1989It was the first book, almost one of the few books, I've read, where sex was a way the female character used to deal with physical pain, and perhaps also inner tumult. They were having sex cause they were both available, not because they were in love or crazy about each other physically. Physically, the book is A4 size, and bound with plastic-coated wire-spiral, so it will open easily on music stands. I was writing at the time that McGahan had "Praise" published and I used to dream of finishing a novel that would win the Australian/Vogel Literary Award that McGahan won for “Praise.” It was an award for writers under 35. The above is according to Allen and Ulwin and requires, I think, a little translation; ‘frank’ means there is a lot of sex and ‘utterly’ that the sex in question is not always very pleasant so if you are not used to reading about sex it may be a bit confrontational at times. I wish I could translate the ‘darkly humorous’ however at no point did I find any humour at all in the novel, so you are on your own there. Praise is an utterly frank and darkly humorous novel about being young in the Australia of the 1990s.” Faith Will Sing (Dan Damon) – Hope Publishing Company (distributed in Europe by Stainer & Bell Ltd) 1993 With One Voice [Australian Hymn Book] (including Catholic supplement) – Collins/HarperCollins Religious 1979

Hymns | Praise!

In Every Corner Sing (Shirley Murray) – Hope Publishing Company (distributed in Europe by Stainer & Bell Ltd) 1992 Do not say, 'But it is hypocritical to thank God with my tongue when I don't feel thankful in my heart.' There is such a thing as hypocritical thanksgiving. Its aim is to conceal ingratitude and get the praise of men. That is not your aim. Your aim in loosing your tongue with words of gratitude is that God would be merciful and fill your words with the emotion of true gratitude. You are not seeking the praise of men; you are seeing the mercy of God. You are not hiding the hardness of ingratitude, but hoping for the in-breaking of the Spirit. I sang many of these hymns at my infants school between 1979 and 1982. Our Morning Assembly was held in the school hall three times every week. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. I have vivid and powerful memories of us singing these songs with a projector projecting the words on a big screen so we could all sing them. Our teacher bashing the piano and invariably telling us to sing a lot louder as God would just not hear us. This 'Come And Praise' hymn book was central to the collective worship at my school - right up until I left in 1985 when the last hymn we sung together was 'One More Step'.These two books were published by BBC Active (an imprint of Education Publishers, Pearson Education Group) so that listeners to the BBC's school radio assembly programme "Together" could join in the singing. Fill us with your love (Thomas Colvin) – Hope Publishing Company (distributed in Europe by Stainer & Bell Ltd) 1983 Moreover, we should probably ask the despairing saint, 'Do you know your heart so well that you are sure the words of thanks have no trace of gratitude in them?' I, for one, distrust my own assessment of my motives. I doubt that I know my good ones well enough to see all the traces of contamination. And I doubt that I know my bad ones well enough to see the traces of grace. Therefore, it is not folly for a Christian to assume that there is a residue of gratitude in his heart when he speaks and sings of God's goodness even though he feels little or nothing. To this should be added that experience shows that doing the right thing, in the way I have described, is often the way toward being in the right frame. Hence Baxter gives this wise counsel to the oppressed Christian: Complete Celebration Hymnal, The (incorporating New Songs of Celebration) – McCrimmon Publishing Company Ltd 1991

What People Say

In Praise of All-Encircling Love II (June Boyce-Tillman) – Hildegard Press/Association for Inclusive Language 1995 Praise really brings home the dreariness of a booze and drug filled, aimless, twenty something life and the book is incredibly successful at making you momentarily squirm in remembrance of some of your own twenty-something 'wasted' years. A lot of the scenes, language and attitudes rang true, loud and clear. Resolve to spend most of your time in thanksgiving and praising God. If you cannot do it with the joy that you should, yet do it as you can. You have not the power of your comforts; but have you no power of your tongues? Say not that you are unfit for thanks and praises unless you have a praising heart and were the children of God; for every man, good and bad, is bound to praise God, and to be thankful for all that he hath received, and to do it as well as he can, rather than leave it undone.... Doing it as you can is the way to be able to do it better. Thanksgiving stirreth up thankfulness in the heart.” I know some people object to this sort of religious education and collective worship in schools but, from my own very personal experience, I think it is extremely important. It is something that should happen and should also continue. For I can just honestly say these hymns were a crucial part of my own spiritual, moral and religious development. Indeed I have to admit, as a boy, I found morning worship to be extremely profound. I took it very seriously and looked forward to it. I looked forward to being with God in the school hall so I could encounter Him. So I could just be with Him and worship Him. I clearly remember experiencing or seeing God in my assemblies. It was amazing. An experience that I'll always treasure.
