About this deal

In Time Zone J, Montreal artist Julie Doucet draws from her old diary entries to chronicle a whirlwind love affair from her early 20s. After developing an intimate correspondence with a reader overseas — not unheard of in the 1980s, when comic artists often mailed their work and communicated with readers through letters — Doucet flies from Montreal to France to meet the soldier, who's on furlough for a few days.

Jarrett Melendez is an American food writer, a regular contributor to Bon Appetit and author of the cookbook The Comic Kitchen. World Record Holders ranges from wistful childhood nostalgia to chagrined post-fame encounters, touching on formally ambitious visual puns and gut-busting what-ifs. It was translated by Helge Dascher and Rob Aspinall. Detective Comics #1061 by is a graphic novel by Mariko Tamaki, Sina Grace & Nadia Shammas.(Shawnee Custalow, sinagrace.tumblr.com, nadiashammas.com, DC Comics) World Record Holders ranges from wistful childhood nostalgia to chagrined post-fame encounters, touching on formally ambitious visual puns and gut-busting what-ifs. Delisle again and again shows how life is both exhilarating and embarrassing. Delisle visits an exhibition of his work in another country and is confronted by an angry spouse who blames him for destroying her marriage. A juvenile game of Bows and Arrows turns menacing as arrows shot straight up in the air turn into barely visible missiles of death. A coded message from space creates different reactions from different people — debates, dance festivals, gallery shows. ( From Drawn & Quarterly) Squire, a fantasy graphic novel, follows a young woman named Aiza. She's a member of the Ornu people, a subjugated group in the crumbling Bayt-Saiji Empire. With war on the horizon, Aiza enlists to train as a Squire in hopes it will lead her to Knighthood — and full citizenship. But as Aiza navigates the social and physical rigours of military training, she realizes the Empire's plans for "the greater good" may not be what's best for her people.

Scott B. Henderson is an award-winning author and illustrator from Winnipeg. He's previously collaborated with Robertson on books like Sugar Falls, The Chief, 7 Generations and other books. He's also the artist behind the A Girl Called Echo series.I generally like Guy Delisle's work, but this collection of short stories from the late 1990s and early 2000s just didn't work for me. Too many of the attempts at humor rely on absurdity or nonsense, and it's almost all flights of fancy instead of the nonfiction stuff for which he has gained renown. When observing the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim populations that call Jerusalem home, Delisle’s drawn line is both sensitive and fair, assuming nothing and drawing everything. Jerusalem showcases once more Delisle’s mastery of the travelogue. Helge Dascher is a frequent translator of Delisle's comic books. She's also translated Aya by Marguerite Abouet and Clément Oubrerie, White Rapids by Pascal Blanchet and Paul Goes Fishing by Michel Rabagliati. Ethan Young is an American comic book writer, known for books like Nanjing: The Burning City, The Dragon Path, Space Bear and The Battles of Bridget Lee. Before he penned his famous travelogues about life in faraway countries, Pyongyang, Burma Chronicles, Jerusalem: Chronicles from the Holy City, and Shenzhen, author Guy Delisle was an animator hoping to leave his job and become a comics artist. He tried his hand first at short stories, anecdotes, and experimental strips. Those comics are collected in the career-spanning collection World Record Holders out now from Drawn & Quarterly.

He has twice co-won the Governor General's Literary Award for young people's literature — illustration with artist Julie Flett, for their picture books On the Traplineand When We Were Alone.World Record Holders ranges from wistful childhood nostalgia to chagrined post-fame encounters, touching on formally ambitious visual puns and gut-busting what-ifs. A juvenile game of Bows and Arrows turns menacing as arrows shot straight up in the air turn into barely visible missiles of death. A coded message from space creates different reactions from different people—debates, dance festivals, gallery shows. Translated by Helge Dascher. In the fifth issue of the DC miniseries, Naomi McDuffie, also known as Powerhouse, must give her all to protect her adopted hometown from a full-scale invasion. Stillwater is a mysterious town with some unusual rules: no one can die and no one can leave. This special one-shot issue of the horror series shares more chilling tales from the town, including what happens to characters who manage to free themselves — or so they think. There’s a reason established musicians sometimes put out collections of early demos, late into their careers. There’s a hint of vanity, of course, underpinning the assumption that someone wants to hear how they came to write a memorable song. It’s also an expression of vulnerability though, the pulling aside of a curtain to offer audiences a peek at the mysterious act of creation.

David F. Walker is an award-winning comic book writer, filmmaker and adjunct professor from Portland. His writing appears in series like Luke Cage, Occupy Avengers and Nighthawk. Graphic novelist Guy Delisle brings readers into the heart of places both close to home and around the world Andrew Wheeler is an Eisner and Schuster Award-winning comic book writer from Toronto. His work can be seen in Wonder Woman, Dungeons & Dragons and Shout Out.There is much tongue-in-cheek wit here — thanks in no small part to translators Helge Dascher and Rob Aspinall — revealing a playfulness to Delisle that is often lost in his weightier observational humour about places like North Korea and Jerusalem. Take the story ‘Youri and Youri’, for example, where two astronauts representing our race and an alien species may or may not have switched places due to a cosmic accident after spending years in suspended animation. ‘Sweet Revenge’ documents a century-old fight between a mulberry tree and maple tree growing beside it. There’s an axe involved, and a slow battle that is supposed to end with the mulberry tree destroying its enemy within the next 38 years. There’s nothing like these tales in Delisle’s oeuvre, and it points to a path he might have walked down. Sina Grace is an American comic writer, artist and social media personality. His work has appeared in books by Image, Marvel, DC Comics and BOOM!
