My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes. Girl power. It seems like we should be beyond needing stories that show that girls can be more than just princesses. That they can in fact be doctors. But unfortunately, we're not so this is a nice way to encourage girls to do something they love.

Zog and the Flying Doctors' is another great story by Julia Donaldson, and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The two have their share of books written and illustrated together, including 'The Gruffalo' and 'Room on the Broom,' two adorable and poetic stories about interesting creatures. In this tale, Zog, a dragon-ambulance, shuttles two doctors, known as Gadabout the Great and Princess Pearl, all over in the name of medicine. They work on a variety of creatures, from mermaids to lions to unicorns, spreading goodness through their ability to make everyone feel better. However, when Princess Pearl's uncle, also known as the king, discovers that she has traded her princess duties for those of a doctor, he banishes her to his palace, making her focus on doing things only meant for princesses. Funnily enough, I find it harder to write not in verse, though I feel I am now getting the hang of it! My novel THE GIANTS AND THE JONESES is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic PRINCESS MIRROR-BELLE who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old. I have just finished writing a novel for teenagers.

Zog" was a pretty good book, but the addition of the princess from the first book as well as Gadabout the Great, turned it into an even better book. Families can talk about some of the positive messages in Zog and the Flying Doctors. What examples of teamwork, compassion, and integrity were there? Why are these such important character strengths to have? Can you give any real life examples when you've demonstrated any of these?
