About this deal

I’ve already said that, even within the 250W constraints set by EU legislation, the TSDZ2 is not as powerful as some other offerings from Bosch and Shimano. That’s not a disaster as a more frugal motor will give you a longer range, but it would be nice to have a bit more oomph at the top end. In some cases, faults are caused by the way the kit has been installed or misused (eg derestricted, despite our warnings) Torque-sensing system doesn't suit everyone since you'll still need to add a fair amount of effort for the pedal-assist system to effectively work Let’s start off with the key question – is a bike with a retrofitted Tongsheng TSDZ2 motor going to be as good as a dedicated ebike?

Hopefully as ebikes become more popular there’ll be a broader choice of off-the-peg offerings, but for now if your needs are at all “specialised”, you might find an easier route to happiness by finding the perfect bike first, and then electrifying it. The TSDZ2 is “torque-sensing”– if you pedal gently, you get a gentle assist; if you pedal hard, the motor works harder. This differs from the other common mid-drive kit (Bafang) which is cadence sensing – you set the assistance you want, and so long as the pedals are turning, the motor gives that flat level of assist. This has nothing to do with the manufacturers' power rating, if the manufacturers say 250W then that is what they expect the users to use it for on average.

Battery - The number of hours an e-bike can travel highly depends on its battery capacity and motor type. A motor that drains less energy from the battery can power a bike for long. Whether you're cruising around town or climbing a steep hill, this motor gives you the boost you need to get where you're going. And because it's a mid-motor design, it's perfect for those who want a more balanced ride. So if you're looking for an electric bike conversion kit that can keep up with your active lifestyle, the TongSheng Mid Motor is the perfect choice. More responsive and intuitive pedal assist feel – some say this brings the feel of the motor closer to that of the expensive Bosch system.

I did have a few minor gripes. The instructions could have covered the entire build, not just fitting the motor. The design of the display remote meant I found it difficult to select the information button without accidentally changing the assistance level and I noticed, if you accidentally have your foot on the pedal when you turn the unit on, it seems to mis-calibrate its torque sensitivity and you end up with little or no assistance. Range - Since speed helps determine the range an e-bike can cover, it will take more battery power to travel at a higher speed than a lower speed. Range may also vary with the terrain, motor type, and weight of the bike. The paperwork required differs for each scheme and should be available from your employer or from the links below for each scheme: At the moment, Bosch and Shimano motors have a two-year warranty from new. After that, if you get a fault, you either live with it or get a dealer to buy and fit a replacement motor (and from what I can tell it has to be exactly the same motor model – no upgrading). It’s not entirely clear how that process works, or whether dealers can get hold of spare parts, or just entire motors.

However, is it possible to use the TSDZ2 to make yourself an ebike that is better for your specific needs than anything else on the market, and save a bunch of cash? Absolutely. Electric Bike Conversions is registered with four of these schemes - Bike2Work, Cycle Scheme, Green Commute Initiative and CyclePlus. You'll see our name listed on each of these schemes such as Earth Cycles or Bike Bros. These are other names we trade under, but we are the same company. Users are allowed to exceed the 250W for short periods of time when climimg hills and still under the 25kph. That is how the EN15194 standard is set. This Tongsheng TSDZ2 review is based on my experience installing over 30 of these motor kits on bikes as diverse as road bikes, mountain bikes and recumbents. Find out more about my electric bike conversion service. With the Tongsheng, spare parts are available even to amateur mechanics, and there’s a good amount of stuff online on how to replace parts.

The ‘Sprag clutch’ or one-way bearing has also been known to fail occasionally. ***This issue has been rectified with the latest ‘B’ model. Type of assistance - An e-bike may offer assistance when the engine starts (without pedaling). You may also find one that requires a little pedaling effort for the motor to start. Generally, the TSDZ2 is reliable. But, problems can and do occur. Sometimes, these may manifest within the first few miles, and others may not happen until the motor has over a thousand miles under the belt. Environmental factors seem to play a part, and if you live in a wet country, it’s worth remembering that the Tongsheng isn’t waterproof. If you have a mobility reduction or impairment, you should opt for the TSDZ2T which is the TSDZ2 with throttle which helps climbing hills without extra work. The TSDZ2 might not be as good, but you can buy a whole load of other upgrades for that price difference. Or, maybe, the TSDZ2 allows you to dip a toe in the electric bike world that was previously just unaffordable. Good – user serviceable and upgradeable Motor type - Mid-drive motors have a higher capacity for hill climbing while hub motors (which are inefficient on hills) work well on flat, consistent terrain. Levels of support - With the levels of support ranging from 3 to 9, you get to choose the level of assistance depending on your pedaling efforts and roughness of the terrain. Whereas the TSDZ2 uses a torque sensor, the Bafang uses a cadence sensor, giving the motor an on/off feel. The Bafang is much quieter, almost silent. But it’s heavier, more expensive and just as prone to technical faults. For more information, please read my Bafang vs. Tongheng comparison article. Pros and Cons Pros
