About this deal

Our testing is based on real-life use, so you can ignore the marketing blurb and find out what it's like to use a high chair on a day-to-day basis. Will the one you choose be the toast of breakfast, or a kitchen nightmare? Storage & organisation Furniture Textiles Kitchenware & tableware Kitchens Lighting Decoration Rugs, mats & flooring Beds & mattresses Baby & children Smart home Bathroom products Laundry & cleaning Plants & plant pots Home electronics Home improvement Outdoor living Food & beverages Christmas Shop Shop by room Harness – most high chairs have a five-point harness, but some have a three-point one (so it fits around the waist and between the legs, but has no shoulder straps). You'll likely see a solid crotch bar (also known as a pommel) to help prevent your baby from slipping forward out of the chair. We offer three trays in line with the three chair widths available. The actual surface area of the trays is exactly the same but the slots for the mounting arms have to be in different positions in line with the chair width meaning that the trays aren’t interchangeable between different chair widths.

Footrest tests We apply a weight to the footrest, to replicate a toddler climbing on it, or using it to stand up when in the high chair. We've seen some fail at 10kg, which is around the weight of a one-year-old. Type: Freestanding highchair which converts into a toddler chair | Materials: Not stated | Suitable from: 6 months+ | Harness: Yes | Wheels?: No What we love

1. Best overall highchair: Stokke Tripp Trapp

I had a mimzy highchair and it was fab, but it was recommended to me as little one has hip dysplasia and its really wide. It could be a pain to clean but all the padding comes off and goes in the washing machine which I used to do once a week (normally Sunday after dinner and then it would be dry by Monday dinner time after nursery)."(Recommended by Mumsnetter ItsSnowJokes) Our verdict The robustness of the safety harness (is it three-point or five? Does it seem secure when attached?)

Tray Retaining Straps – If you are concerned that the child might be able to lift the tray off themselves and hurt themselves or those around them then we offer tray securing straps that can only be opened by someone not sitting in the chair. We spend hours researching, speaking to parents, analysing data and listening to experts before we test out the products on our shortlist. Cleaning With cloths and brushes at the ready, our experts wipe and scrub Bolognese sauce and banana purée from the covers, trays and harnesses to see which ones are easy to clean. We pay particular attention to those hard to reach places where food can get trapped, such as seams and tray inserts.

Why buy a highchair?

Three available modes, with all accessories included in the price: newborn bouncer with toy bar, weaning high chair and toddler seat The score we give each high chair is made up of a combination of the elements of our tough tests, ignoring price, and is broken down as follows:
