About this deal

Port - Fortified Wine Founded in 1670, Warre’s is the first and the oldest British port company established in Portugal. In 2020 Warre’s celebrated its 350th anniversary. As one of the first producers to ship port wine to Britain, Warre’s was at the forefront of a great tradition. This pioneering spirit continues today with Warre’s setting the benchmark for innovation in the port trade and continuing their legacy of tireless commitment to quality. Warre’s signature style is floral, fresh and elegant, reflecting the characteristics of their higher-altitude vineyards. The graduation levels of the grapes were generally excellent in all varieties allowing for longer fermentations. This, together with high night-time temperatures in the Upper Douro, required the constant use of temperature control to cool the must. The best wines were made from the ripe Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca”. Warre’s Quinta da Cavadinha is one of the finest vineyard estates in the Douro and produces outstanding wines that are used to make Warre’s Classic Vintage Port. Vintage Port is the King of Port, only produced from the very finest grapes. They are aged exclusively in bottle, slowly maturing in Warre’s 350 year-old cellars in Portugal prior to release. A true testament to quality.

As mentioned above, in declared vintage years, the best wines from Cavadinha are used as the principal component of Warre’s Vintages. In other good years a limited quantity of the Quinta’s wines are set aside for bottling after two years in cask. These are known as Single Quinta Vintage Ports. These wines share the same characteristic Warre’s style, with fine elegance and lifted floral aromas, but more closely reflect the unique characteristics of Warre’s Cavadinha vineyard. It is atraditional Douro Port Blend of TourigaNacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Amarela. An excellent dessert wine to enjoy on its own or with chocolate desserts. A very good match with blue cheeses and terrific with mature hard cheeses. This Port shows Warre’s hallmark floral nose, accentuated by the high proportion of Touriga Franca in the blend, a variety associated with rose aromas and violet scents. This Port is a worthy example of Warre’s subtle, elegant style, approachable when young, but with the potential to age for decades. Single Quinta Vintage Ports are made in a similar way to other Vintage Ports in that they’re bottled, without filtration, after a couple or so years in barrel and continue to mature in bottle from there. They will have a sediment and so should be decanted before drinking.

Store the bottle horizontally, ideally in a cool place with a constant temperature. Decant before serving, ideally a few hours beforehand. The vines at Cavadinha are planted at a height of 100 to 250 metres, a third of the vines are over thirty years old and there is a high proportion, around 25%, of Touriga Nacional. The blend of wines from the lower vineyard (tannic, concentrated, floral) and the upper vineyards (fresh, elegant, subtle) establish the unique flavour profile of Warre’s Vintage Ports. In ‘declared’ years, the wines of Quinta da Cavadinha are an important component of Warre’s Vintage Port. In years between declarations, the wines from Cavadinha are often released as a Vintage Port solely from this property. These wines show a recognisable provenance, directly reflecting the vineyard’s cooler ripening cycle defined by its altitude and relatively sheltered aspect, which produce fragrant, fresh and very elegant wines. These characteristics were advantageous in the hot and dry conditions experienced through the 2005 growth and maturation stages. The altitude and aspect of the Cavadinha vineyard once again proved their worth in sustaining the vines through the hot, dry summer. Quinta da Cavadinha is one of Warre’s best and most reliable estates and, outside of vintage years, its wines are frequently released as single quinta vintages. As with true vintage port, Warres Quinta da Cavadinha 2004is bottled without any fining or filtration and therefore should be decanted before drinking. It will also continue to age in the bottle for at least 15 years and often much longer. Warres Quinta da Cavadinha Vintage Ports is aged in Warre’s cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for 10 years or more after harvest before being released to the market, ready for immediate enjoyment. This will develop a natural sediment, or crust, with age and will require decanting. With age, the Cavadinha wines develop even more elegance and balance; the nose can give aromas of very fine old burgundy after some years in bottle.

Decant before serving, ideally a few hours beforehand. An excellent dessert wine to enjoy on its own or with chocolate desserts. A very good match with blue cheeses.
