That’s not to say it wouldn’t work on motorways. Where the Tarmac is smoother, and the body movements are more consistent, the ES fares better. Suspension noise is well insulated and even the four-cylinder engine note doesn’t get especially intrusive. Although, as ever, the CVT does sound crude if you really press on. That doesn’t mean that Lexus doesn’t make fast cars, it does, in the form of the LFA and the LC 500. But it doesn’t have the sporty formula quite dialed in with its lower-tiered sedans like the IS 350. Don’t get me wrong, the IS 350 is still a great car in its own right. It’s comfortable enough for the daily drive and with a 311-hp V6, it has plenty of power to play around with. But it leaves me wanting just a little more.

I really love the way Lexus generally goes about things, forging its own path and being all the better for it sometimes, but sadly the ES ploughs away on its own furrowbut still ends up falling short of the 5 Series. I’d recommend these Fitflop sneakers for medium to wide feet, and for feet that crave extra room in the toe box for conditions like bunions and hammertoes. Unfortunately half sizes only run through 8.5. After that you have 9, 10 and 11. If you’re in between sizes, I’d recommend sizing down since the fit is roomy.
