After last year's release of Oud Noir, Versace complements the Oud Collection with a female fragrance, Oud Oriental, in a stunning gold statement. Looking to the cultural significance of oud; used in traditional incense and perfumes for centuries and mentioned in one of the world’s oldest written texts (the Sanskrit Vedas from India), it has a punch that makes it more appropriate for evening than day. Created by Parfums de Marly’s artistic director, Julien Sprecher, Haltane is a bold, very masculine scent with ageless appeal which has been composed using a pyramid of exceptional materials. In summary, Versace Oud Noir smells like a gentle oud scent, traversing several nuances through its development. Created by renowned perfumers Maurice Roucel and Pierre-Constantin Guiros in 2019, The Other Side Of Oud is the newest addition to the noble and lauded Oud Collection of fine fragrances from this historic perfume house.

This peppery, spicy-sweet rose makes the perfect pair for a very balmy and medicinal oud note that goes away with time, developing slowly on the skin and becoming slightly animalic (leather) towards the end. Versace oud noir is for me possibly the best designer oriental fragrance out there at the moment in 2018, with regards to the performance issues of current ysl la nuit and the oriental genre being unpopular at the moment. Created by Pierre Montale, best known as the first French perfumer to base a line on Aouds, this fragrance is a soliflore deep dive into oud. Diptyque rarely strays further than the Mediterranean to influence its bright, aromatic and sparkling olfactory signature and this is what makes Oud Palao, centred around the dark, woody and resinous notes of oud from Laos, even more beguiling.It comes as no surprise, then, that its unique but very wearable interpretation of the oud ingredient, part of the Signatures of the Sun collection, would make our list as an ease-in for any agarwood (oud) virgins. Excellent longevity for me, and I don't know enough about sillage yet to do ratings on it, but I figure this would go high up on my list. The fragrance then leaves a long-lasting impact with the final base notes of deep leather and tantalising oud.

The trees are grown throughout South-East Asia, India and Bangladesh and agarwood is said to be the most expensive timber in the world – indeed, one of the most expensive of all natural raw ingredients. Cedarwood, patchouli from Indonesia and sandalwood from New Caledonia play a secondary but important role in accentuating the fragrance’s woody profile. This Harrods exclusive brings unprecedented complexity to the opulent character of oud; a fragrance that doesn’t hold back. It's hard to resist stuff like this if you're a real frag head, but it's also not gonna sell well to the mass majority, because it's not fresh, and necessarily a compliment getter. Formulated by Ormonde Jayne founder Linda Pilkington, the standout scent, in our opinion, is Ormonde Elixir, based on the original Ormonde Man with its forests of hemlock and cedar but obviously updated with the animalistic spice of the precious oud ingredient.

The oud smells contemporary and trendy, broadened by spices, zest, sweetness, and resinous undertones. Charismatic, seductive and full of mellow flavour, it is well-balanced and intense, but with a mellow flavour.
