Steering is a little “vague” since the weight of the head tends to make the cleaner want to move forward rather than turn. There’s a really useful brush attachment too, which features longer bristles that makes it more practical than some of the stubby tools we’ve used with other models.

On carpet, you can feel the weight in the head even more, as you get added suck-down from the vacuum. The latter is handy to keep your vacuum cleaner topped up if you don’t have power in your storage cupboard. The handle is sufficient to make longer cleaning sessions hassle free and comfortable, while you can easily reach the ‘Power Control’ button on the back of the unit with your thumb to raise or lower the suction level. That’s still manageable, but having all the weight in the head does tend to make steering a little heavy.A solid mid-range vacuum cleaner, the light Hoover H-Free 300 is a good grab-and-go cleaner for smaller jobs, although you’ll want a standard plug-in cleaner for deep cleans in your home. The hose is way too short, it’s low-down fitting to the floor-head exacerbates the problem, and the suction was minimised to the point where nothing was really being sucked up. To reach those difficult-to-clean areas under chairs and sofas, the Hoover’s handle tilts and reclines very close to the ground, allowing the head to get under low obstacles.It took at least two or three swipes to pick up all hairs on the floor and pull a few out from the edges. Suction power is also really good at the top setting, although it does drop away on those other lower settings. Inside the body there's a removable battery pack, but we found the Hoover H-Free 300 convenient for recharging by plugging the supplied cable straight into the port on the body of the unit.
