About this deal

Tony Bakes, the organiser of this meet and a longtime ambassador for the sport, has a gleam in his eye when he talks about flight. “Bear in mind a lot of archers are very ignorant about what their equipment can actually do. This is one of the few times you can actually find that out. And then you can understand why we take safety that seriously.”

An acronym for “Axle-To-Axle”, the length between the two pivotal axles which hold the cams or wheels onto the limbs on a compound bow. To hold the bow, used in reference to holding the bow, too tightly; the handle of the bow held by the archer. Ground QuiverA scintillating medieval adventure of warfare and espionage, steeped in years of research, perfect for fans of David Gilman and Conn Iggulden. A small level, usually located in the bow sights, to indicate when the bow is being held vertical. Limbs Once the bow is has the 'centre shot' fixed, the arrow will be exiting the bow straight. This means there will be no left-right sight adjustment necessary between 20y and 100y (18m & 90m) When there is no lateral adjustment between short (15 – 20) & long (70 –90) distances your centre shot is correct. Walk up to the target, until about 15 - 20 metres away. Move the sight up (obviously) to your indoor mark and shoot a few arrows using exactly the same string picture. (It may be a good idea to put a small 40 cm face to one side of the 122 cm face, and shoot at that.) Are the arrows still flying straight to the gold? Do you need to move the sight to the left or the right?

A characteristic of bow performance where the force/draw curve rises more rapidly over the final part of the draw. Stance The jet departed from the well-known Lincolnshire airbase as part of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team’s move to a new Station.

Today, with a headwind, it is not a day for records, although many world marks have been set in the UK. The ‘Superbowl of flight’ is the yearly shoot on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA, and Mike has been there many times and set records. “The difference in weather, and in elevation, is huge. In September in Utah it can be between 80 and 100 degrees and very dry. I find I can shoot 10% further out there than here and that’s the humidity. They’re also set up with a following wind – the salt flats are so massive so they can just go anywhere. We’re not much above sea level. You’re 5000 feet up there. The air is thinner and easier to shoot through. And yet a lot of the records are held here in Britain.” Target points are bullet-shaped with a conical point, designed to penetrate target butts easily without causing excessive damage to them. And it is a brutally honest discipline: When you loose an arrow at roughly 45° angle into the air, it will immediately and remorselessly betray a sloppy release, unmatched spine, unbalanced shaft, or any other shortcomings. Safety arrows are designed to be used in various forms of reenactment combat, to reduce the risk when shot at people. These arrows may have heads that are very wide or padded, such as the large foam ball tip used in archery tag. In combination with bows of restricted draw weight and draw length, these heads may reduce to acceptable levels the risks of shooting arrows at suitably armoured people. The parameters will vary depending on the specific rules being used and on the levels of risk felt acceptable to the participants. For instance, SCA combat rules require a padded head at least 1 + 1⁄ 4in (3.2cm) in diameter, with bows not exceeding 28 inches (710mm) and 50lb (23kg) of draw for use against well-armoured individuals. Parker, Glenn (1992). "Steel Points". The Traditional Bowyer's Bible - Volume Two. Guilford: The Lyons Press. ISBN 1-58574-086-1.But by far the favourite, and most prestigious, discipline was flight shooting. On the shooting line, which was usually marked by a small stone, or column, social status didn’t matter much, and sultans shot next to officials, merchants, and craftsmen. There was, however, a hierarchy among the archers. Easton X10 arrows are heavier than Easton ACE arrows. Archers shooting WA1440 rounds which includes the 90 metre distance often prefer ACEs due to their better sight mark. Archers shooting 70 metres exclusively, may prefer X10s.
